“Open Streets DC on October 5, Expect Temporary Detours and Parking Restrictions on Georgia Ave”

“As the District celebrates the inaugural Open Streets DC event on Saturday, October 5, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) advises motorists to expect road closures, parking restrictions and travel delays on and around Georgia Avenue NW between Missouri Avenue NW and Barry Place NW. Road closures will be in effect along Georgia Avenue from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on October 5.

Getting to the Event
Open Streets DC is a car-free event. Attendees are encouraged to use mass transit or other forms of sustainable transportation to get to and from the event.

The Georgia Avenue/Petworth Station and the Shaw/Howard University Station on Metro’s Green Line are closest to the Open Streets route.
Capital Bikeshare is offering free trips for all riders using the promo code OpenStreetsDC
Capital Bikeshare will host bike corrals at the following locations:
Georgia Avenue and Emerson Street NW
Georgia Avenue and New Hampshire Avenue NW
Fairmont Street and Georgia Avenue NW

Lime will host scooter corrals at the following locations:
Georgia Avenue and Kennedy Street NW
Georgia Avenue and Crittenden Street NW
Georgia Avenue between New Hampshire Avenue and Quincy Street NW
Georgia Avenue between Irving Street and Columbia Road NW
Georgia Avenue and Barry Place NW

WMATA bus routes 70, 79, 62. 63. 64, H2, H4, E4, 52, and 54 all offer access near the event route; some detours will be in effect.

Detours
Motorists can use cross streets east and west of the Open Streets route; however, no motor vehicles will be permitted to cross Georgia Avenue during the event. The Metropolitan Police Department will station vehicles along adjacent blocks to direct through-moving vehicles to the detour route. The detour route will include North Capitol Street, Missouri Avenue, 13th Street NW, Rhode Island Avenue NW, Florida Avenue NW, Barry Place NW, and Bryant Street NW.

DDOT will place signage along the detour route and Traffic Control Officers will be in place to guide motorists around the Open Streets event. Motorists should expect delays due to road closures. All roadway users are advised to stay alert while traveling in this area.

Bus Service
Several WMATA Metrobus lines in the corridor will be detoured during the event. For more information about bus service, please click here.

Parking Restrictions
Parking restrictions will be in effect along Georgia Avenue between midnight and 5:00 p.m. on October 5. A limited number of additional Emergency No Parking signs will be posted adjacent to the route to accommodate bus detours.

About the Event
Open Streets DC is a part of the Mayor Muriel Bowser’s Vision Zero DC initiative and demonstrates the importance of safe spaces for Washingtonians of all ages and abilities whether they are walking, cycling, or scooting. The event will include safety demonstrations focused on various modes of transportation, including education for drivers to watch for pedestrians and cyclists and a demonstration of a protected bike lane.
