“La Famosa, a Puerto Rican eatery, coming to Navy Yard in Spring 2020”

From a press release:

“La Famosa, a tribute to the vibrant, flavorful cuisine of Puerto Rico, will open in the Navy Yard neighborhood of Washington, DC. The all-day, “fine-casual” restaurant will serve lunch and dinner alongside an extensive coffee program and full bar. The brainchild of Chef Joancarlo Parkhurst, La Famosa is a nod to the Caribbean island where he was born. Located at 1300 4th Street, SE in The Bower, the restaurant is expected to open in Spring 2020. Meaning ‘The Famous One’, La Famosa is the name of the Puerto Rican canning food company which Parkhurst’s family founded in 1921. It’s famous for Coco López, a key ingredient in the piña colada.

The diversity of Puerto Rican cuisine, thanks to influences from native Amerindians, African slaves and European settlers will be embraced at La Famosa. The menu will be unique interpretations of classic dishes like sorullitos de maiz, chillo frito, chuleta Kan Kan, tripleta and guisados are inspired by Parkhurst’s memories of cooking and eating with his grandmother as young boy. An all-day, full-service coffee program will feature beans sourced directly from Puerto Rico, while tropical ingredients will be the base of house-made juices. Vibrant cocktails will be rum-forward featuring classics like a Rum Sour and of course, a Piña Colada. The restaurant’s “fine-casual” concept will provide the look and feel of an upscale casual restaurant without the formality and full-service experience.

La Famosa aims to be fun, a little irreverent but always inviting. It will be a representation of Parkhurst’s upbringing that was so deeply rooted in food, while also embracing the sense of community and belonging he has felt since moving to Washington, DC 20 years ago. “We like to think of La Famosa as ‘Born in Puerto Rico and Made in DC,’ said Joancarlo Parkhurst. “Puerto Rican food is humble and comforting yet creative through our adversity, and we’re excited to share La Famosa with the city.”

Designed by GrizForm Design Architects, the 60-seat restaurant will draw on a sense of Puerto Rican nostalgia, with saturated colors on wood textures, raw cement block and rustic metals. In the warmer months, patrons can enjoy an extensive 58-seat patio.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
