172-unit apartment building, The Silva, Coming to Adams Morgan

1630 Columbia Road, NW

“Dear PoPville,

Did you see the new construction project (The Silva) getting started on Columbia Road & Mozart Place (across from The Argonne)? It’s right behind the Scottish Rite building (and was a big parking lot).”

From a press release:

“EastBanc and Mitsui Fudosan America, Inc. broke ground on and announced the name of their 172-unit apartment building at 1630 Columbia Road NW. Now called The Silva, which is Latin for “grove” or “forest,” the building will feature a lush courtyard and will be a retreat in the dense urban fabric of Adams Morgan, located in northwest Washington, D.C.

“It gives us great pride to inaugurate the construction of this exciting new project and introduce The Silva to the community,” said Anthony Lanier, President and CEO of EastBanc. “Through The Silva’s unmatched amenities and residences, we are looking forward to bringing EastBanc’s best-in-class design and service standards to Adams Morgan.”

Representatives from EastBanc, Mitsui Fudosan America and other community partners came together on-site at The Silva today to celebrate the groundbreaking. The property will sit at the location of the former parking lot next to the D.C. Scottish Rite Temple. The building’s 172 units include both market-rate and affordable housing.

“As Mitsui Fudosan America continues to grow its presence in the Washington D.C. area, we are pleased to announce the commencement of construction on The Silva,” said Elaine Vrooman, Director, Development at Mitsui Fudosan America. “The Silva will be a top-of-the-line residence for members of the Adams Morgan community and we look forward to the completion of this exciting project.”

“We are thrilled to provide architecture for the Silva that’s not only distinctly beautiful, but centered on the resident experience, too,” said Juan Porral, Partner at Grimshaw. “We pride ourselves on buildings with well-integrated landscapes that provide a rich array of amenities and green spaces, all conceived to encourage social activity and community.”

The Silva is designed by award-winning architects Grimshaw and takes inspiration from the buildings in the Meridian Hill Historic District in which it is located. The design features European-inspired finishes in each unit. In addition to the open-air courtyard, the property will include amenities such as a resort-style rooftop pool with an infinity edge, grilling stations and fire pits, private resident dining rooms and a fitness center. The property is easily accessed by the nearby Columbia Heights metro station, as well as the express buses on 16th Street that connectsthe site directly to downtown. The Silva will benefit from the area’s myriad dining and entertainment options including The LINE Hotel, multiple grocery stores and retail.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
