Takoma Park Library Closing for a Four Month “Refresh” Starting Saturday, June 22

From DCPL:

“The Takoma Park Library located at 416 Cedar St. NW will close for a four-month refresh. The last day of service will be Saturday, June 22.

“The District investing more than half-a-billion dollars in creating world-class libraries over the last decade would mean little if we do not invest in the upkeep of our buildings,” said Richard Reyes-Gavilan, executive director of the DC Public Library. “As Takoma celebrates a decade of service since its renovation, this refresh ensures that the building remains a welcoming and inspiring place to visit. The work also allows us to respond to growing and changing community needs.”

The last day to place holds on items to pick up at Takoma Park Library will be Wednesday, June 12.

If you are still waiting for an outstanding hold after June 22, the pickup location for that item will be changed to Shepherd Park Library. If you prefer to pick up the item at another location, you may login to your Library account and select a new location. To login, visit dclibrary.org and click on the orange “my account” button in the upper right hand corner of the Library’s website.

As a courtesy, items checked out from Takoma Park Library that are due between June 15 and June 30, will have their due date extended to July 1. Items may be returned to any DC Public Library location. The exterior book drop at Takoma Park Library will remain open throughout the refresh.

One of four Carnegie Libraries built in Washington, the Takoma Park Library was designed by Peter & Marsh and opened in 1911. The historic library was the first building to be renovated as part of the Library’s building improvement program in 2009. In the 10 years since reopening, the Takoma Park library, like libraries all across the District have seen increases in the number of visitors.

The refresh is expected to last until Fall 2019 and will include the following:

Install a new HVAC system
Upgrade electrical system
Flooring replacement
Re-design the Library Friends room
Upgrade staff restroom
Replace doors where needed
Redesign staff workroom and IT areas
Replace all public computers with newer models
Renovate the lower-level meeting room

During the refresh, the following interim services will be offered:

Outdoor weekly story-time and monthly evening reading-with-dogs programs will be held at the Takoma Recreation Center
Monthly senior tech help programs will be held at the Fort Stevens Recreation Center
Select Summer Challenge programs will be held at the Takoma Busboys and Poets

The nearest library is the Shepherd Park (Juanita E. Thornton) Library at 7420 Georgia Ave. NW. Holds will be routed there while the Takoma Park Library is closed.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
