New Sausage and Beer Hall. Repeat. New Sausage and Beer Hall Coming this Month

3401 Water Street, NW. “The Popal Group will replace Malmaison with sausage and beer hall The Berliner this November”

From a press release:

“This November, The Berliner (3401 Water Street NW), a new scratch-made wurst and beer garden opens near the Georgetown waterfront in the space formerly occupied by neighborhood mainstay Malmaison. The Berliner is the latest concept from D.C.-based The Popal Group, the family-run restaurant group behind Cafe Bonaparte, Lapis Bistro (a recent Bib Gourmand honoree), Lapop, and the former Napoleon Bistro.

Inspired by family ties and modern Berlin comfort food, the menu includes Bavarian classics such as bratwurst, schnitzel and homemade pretzels with beer cheese, in addition to modern fare such as doner kebabs and falafel. The Berliner will also feature 24 beers on tap with a variety of domestic, international and seasonal brews ranging from larger producers to to smaller German breweries rarely found on U.S. menus.

The Berliner will spotlight the decade-long sausage-making expertise of Chef Mike O’Brien. The menu includes six styles of sausages — three of which will rotate throughout the year. O’Brien was formerly the chef at three of the world’s top-rated beer-focused restaurants: Mikkeller Bar (L.A. and San Francisco), The Trappist (Oakland) and The Monk’s Kettle (San Francisco). He has also worked at popular D.C. eateries The Salt Line, Cityzen, Birch & Barley and Churchkey.

The 4,200-square foot beer hall is located in one of Georgetown’s last original warehouse spaces near the historic waterfront corridor on Water Street. The building’s three bay garage doors paired with industrial chic decor and Bauhaus-inspired design offer an authentic venue perfect for a beer hall. The team has also recruited three well-known graffiti artists, Rachel England, Michael Pacheco and Rodrigo Pradel, to create unique murals for the space.

“It’s not every day that culinary talent, conceptual ingenuity and a historic venue converge in one setting,” says owner Omar Popal. “The Berliner undoubtedly upholds President John F. Kennedy’s famous line declaring us all Berliners at heart.”

The Berliner is open Tuesday- Sunday from 5 to 11 pm and on Fridays and Saturdays from 5pm to midnight.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
