Hung Tao Choy Mei Leadership Institute is a kung fu school and cultural center on U St. between 13th and 14th NW. For decades, it has provided martial arts and traditional Chinese and African performance arts training free of charge to District kids. Recently, it lost city funding that sustained these critical after-school programs. At the same time, costs of remaining on U St. have increased dramatically. To cover these funding gaps and attempt to continue providing cultural education, physical fitness, and mentorship to children in the neighborhood, the school has launched a crowdfunding campaign.”
