One Day to Put Real Power in Our Community

By Kelly Brinkley

We only do it for one day each year, but it ripples through all 365 days. Starting at midnight, Do More 24 is United Way of the National Capital Area’s 24 hour online giving day benefiting over 700 D.C., MD and VA nonprofits.

It’s a spectacular undertaking but we see the dividends payoff in a very big way. On Thursday, June 2nd from 12:00 midnight all the way until the clock strikes midnight again, we will be manning the phones, monitoring online analytics and posting on social media channels. And we will be joined by many hundreds of nonprofit organizations throughout the region who will set aside this June 2nd to create an avalanche of desperately needed funds and the opportunity to raise awareness of their missions.

We believe in building the strongest community for our region, therefore we’ve created an effort to ensure that our area’s nonprofits have the support and tools they need to make June 2nd their biggest fundraising day of the year. We’ve been working with more than 700 nonprofits to give them confidence to make big things happen in just 24 hours.  You can view the full list of nonprofit organizations, ranging from animal welfare groups to adult literacy organizations, here.

Do More 24 is more than just a fundraiser, it’s a day that brings our entire community together in ways we never imagined when we set out on this journey. For United Way NCA, the first Thursday in June every year is now a beacon, a call to action in the National Capital community.

Since its inception in 2013, Do More 24™ has raised more than $3.5 million dollars from over 34,000 donations to benefit hundreds of local nonprofit organizations in the Washington D.C., Northern Virginia and Maryland areas.

  • 2013 – $1 million raised through donations and sponsorships.
  • 2014- $1.1 million raised through donations and sponsorships.
  • 2015 – $1.4 million raised through donations and sponsorships.

You can be an instrumental part of the success and join over 11,000 of your friends, neighbors and co-workers by taking part in this year’s National Capital Area’s Do More 24.

Here’s a couple of ways you can help build our community by supporting Do More 24:

  • “Tell 5 Friend” – In support of this year’s Do More 24, we’ve launched a “tell 5 friends” public service announcement. Share the PSA on your social media accounts and help spread the word about tomorrow’s big online giving day.
  • Go to DoMore24.org starting at midnight to donate to your local D.C., MD and VA nonprofit organization to connect with the cause you most care about!

Now as June 2nd draws ever closer, we encourage everyone in our great National Capital community to show up, suit up and Do More to power your community!

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
