“This summer the DC Public Library Foundation (DCPLF) started it’s new Maker-in-Residence (MIR) program. The MIR program is a one-year residency that gives makers, designers, artists and community hobbyists an opportunity to explore, create, and share innovative projects using the library’s tools and resources in the Labs @ DCPL, the DC Public Library’s MakerSpace at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library.DCPLF, along with generous support from the Friends of Tenley-Friendship Neighborhood Library, have given a stipend to two artists, Billy Friebele and Mike Iacovone (both MFA graduates of Maryland Institute College of Art), who will create one significant work of art over the course of the residency, and will also host talks, teach classes and provide on-site training and guidance for anyone interested in the MakerSpace technologies such as robotics, 3D printers, wearable electronics, furniture making and design.
The first lecture in this year-long residency will take place on September 30th at 7pm at the Tenley-Friendship Neighborhood Library (4450 Wisconsin Ave, NW). In this event, free to the public, Friebele and Iacovone will discuss the evolution of their collaborative approach to art production. They will talk about recent projects such as an interactive photographic archive of D.C., a robotic sound machine that reacts to the position of the viewer and a 3D map of Arlington, VA. The talk will include video and images of their work.
Following the lecture, Friebele and Lacovone will lead a workshop on Saturday, October 10 at 3:30pm. That workshop will explore the use of digital tools such as GPS to track physical movement. Those in attendance will then walk through the neighborhood, creating a collective drawing, which will then be discussed and converted to a digital image.
For those hoping to catch an early glimpse of Friebele’s and Iacovone’s projects, two of them will be on display as part of the UNCENSORED: Information Antics art exhibition, which opens on Friday, September 25th at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. The UNCENSORED Opening Night, a ticketed event, includes live music, banned-book-inspired cocktails by local mixologists, and a pop-up market featuring local designers and retailers. The two MIR projects included in the exhibition are a Murder Map of DC by Iocovone and an interactive piece by Friebele that collected sonar data from important places around the city.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!
The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!
What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
