“We purchased a home on Hawaii Ave. NE two years ago. For the neighborhood queens, the area’s called “Pleasant Hill” but we trick people into believing it’s Brookland. Anyways, the woman who owned it before us was an avid gardener and had planted a beautiful garden in the front yard and fruit trees in the back. Unfortunately she passed away, which is why it was up for sale. More than a few times I’ve been pulling weeds in the front yard and a neighbor has passed and told me how happy that garden made them and how the previous owner would work in the yard for many hours and even offered lemonade to passers-by. We have worked our brown thumbs off trying to keep the garden alive to honor her memory and continue to bring a little happiness to our corner.”

Ed. Note: We hear a lot about crime in certain neighborhoods. This is the other side of the coin. If you have a story/experience from your own mean streets please send a brief description in an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dog)com and include what neighborhood you live in.
