General Thomas Getting Gussied Up in Thomas Circle – Just a Regular Refresh

Thanks to Anita for passing on her query about whether or not the General Thomas Statue in the middle of Thomas Circle, was getting painted gold – a legitimate question these days!!

ANC rep Nancy Groth replies:

“NO. The statue of General Thomas is bronze that naturally turns into a green patina over time as the copper majority component oxidizes. Every five years or so they remove the green patina and burnish the bronze back to a bronze color.

What you see right now is the unburnished bronze revealed from the removal of the green.

IT IS JUST GENERAL THOMAS’S STATUE’S NORMAL REFRESH. It has happened four or five times since 2007 when I moved here.”
