Update:

“Dear Jackson-Reed High School Parents and Families,

At Jackson-Reed, we are committed to the safety of our school community. Communicating with families about incidents that take place while students are away from home is critical to maintaining our strong partnerships.

Yesterday evening, gun violence impacted one of our students in a shooting that took place in the neighborhood of our campus. School administrators have been in contact with the student’s family as they receive the medical care they need. Our thoughts are with our student and their family during this time.

The shooting was not near enough to impact afterschool programming, and at no time were we instructed by the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) or DC Public Schools (DCPS) Police to change our building’s operating status. Out of an abundance of caution, DCPS Police have placed our school on special attention. This means students and families may notice an increased law enforcement presence during arrival and dismissal.

I recognize that this incident is concerning, and I want to share with families how we are supporting our community. Jackson-Reed’s dedicated wellness team, comprising two school psychologists, six social workers, ten school counselors, and a network of community-based organizations, is available to support students who need a safe space to talk or share their feelings. Please reach out if we can connect your student with a trusted adult.

The well-being of our community is paramount.

Sincerely,

Sah Brown

Principal, Jackson-Reed High School”
