I cannot tell you how old this makes me feel, having chronicled the construction/opening of this building back in 2010…
From the DC Public Library:
“The Shaw/Watha T. Daniel Library will be closed for renovation starting Monday, May 18. The last day of service will be Sunday, May 17.
The Library will host an open house at the Shaw/Watha T. Daniel Library on Wednesday, May 13, from 4 to 7 p.m. The public will be able to see how the design is responding to goals of the renovation from the Library design and construction team as well as the design and construction partners.
While the Shaw Library has served its community well, the usage patterns have evolved significantly since the library opened in August 2010. In addition to redesigning the layout to meet the new usage needs, the renovation will create a vibrant and rejuvenating space for the community. The design will improve the flow, replace old furniture and update the finishes. The project also includes building-wide upgrades to lighting, HVAC, and energy systems.
The renovated library is expected to open in early 2027. The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, located at 901 G St. NW, will serve as the interim Library during the Shaw/Watha T. Daniel Library renovation.
Quinn Evans is the architect of record. Chiaramonte Construction, a District-based certified business entity, has been awarded the construction contract.
The renovation is supported by federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds in the amount of $7.9 million.
