Signs of the Times: Trees edition

Georgetown Day School (GDS) is located at 4200 Davenport Street, NW

Arborist Now advises: “Avoid Nails or Screws: Refrain from nailing or screwing signs to the tree to prevent damage, pests, and infections.”

Casey Trees says: “Short term, a screw won’t necessarily kill a tree. The entry point of the screw could lead to an infection, and if it’s too small of a branch, it could cause splitting. Probably the biggest risk comes to the chainsaw operator who will eventually have to remove that tree. Hitting metal with a chainsaw is a very dangerous predicament.”

“Welcome to the National Mall, little trees! These lovely new arrivals are here to replace the trees that were removed in 2024 at the start of the Tidal Basin seawall rehabilitation project. A donation from the nation of Japan, the trees represent the most recent chapter in this remarkable cultural exchange dating back to Japan’s original gift of cherry trees in 1912. The saplings – most of them are varieties of cherry trees – will be planted in the coming months where we expect them to thrive and add their splendor to this iconic landscape. We’ll post more updates as the work progresses.”
