Mount Pleasant

Meanwhile in Mount Pleasant – Buses blocked (again. and again. and again)

“Dear PoPville,

Just checking in again on the basically daily occurrence here in Mt Pleasant. Once again, illegally parked (and/or poorly parked) cars are blocking the D72 from turning around. Cars are always parking in front of the stop sign on that strip of 17th St right next to Lamont Plaza. Not joking, this happens at least once a day – thankfully right now the bus driver is doing the rational thing and not laying on the horn.

I got bored the other day and looked at historical images of the plaza (via Streets of Washington), and it looks like this sharp turnaround has been there since the first streetcar was added way back in the day. It’s been adjusted over the years, but it’s always required that wide turn radius. So I can only assume this has been happening (buses/transit vehicles getting stuck there) for over 100 years at this point.”

5 minutes later update: another WMATA staffer had to help walk the bus driver through a roughly 20 point turn to get out without scraping the cars. Culprit pictured: the Toyota behind the MPD car. (and as I’m typing this another bus just pulled up and is having the same trouble, RIP)”
