From a press release:
“The team behind Side Door Pizza is excited to announce the grand opening date of Canton Disco, a new Cantonese-inspired café, restaurant, and bar opening at 1025 1st Street SE. The grand opening celebration will take place on Tuesday, February 17, in honor of Lunar New Year, and will feature a ribbon cutting and traditional lion dance performance at 5PM.
Designed to evolve throughout the day, Canton Disco will offer dinner and late-night dining, takeout and delivery, and expand to daytime café service this spring. “We are proud to be working alongside Chef Timothy Yu and Brent Kroll to bring Canton Disco to the Navy Yard neighborhood,” said co-owner Brian Schram.

Chef Timothy Yu, son of Janet and the late Alan Yu, founders of Hollywood East Café in Wheaton, Maryland, grew up working in his family’s restaurant, which became a cornerstone of the region’s Chinese dining community. At Canton Disco, Yu presents a menu inspired by Cantonese flavors, drawing from familiar concepts and reinterpreted with his own modern, playful twists. The dinner menu focuses on Cantonese BBQ, seafood, noodle dishes, and shareable plates suited for both small groups and larger gatherings. Signature items include the Canton Duck Set with roasted duck breast, bao buns, and duck lo mein; honey char siu pork shoulder; crispy siu yuk pork belly; black pepper Wagyu steak; typhoon shelter shrimp; honey walnut shrimp; and steamed ginger scallion cod. Full menus are provided.
The beverage program is led by Brent Kroll, recently named a 2026 James Beard Award semifinalist for Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service for his wine bar, Maxwell Park. At Canton Disco, Kroll oversees a beverage program designed to pair with the menu across wine, beer, tea, and spirits. The cocktail list includes twelve tea-infused cocktails inspired by the animals of the Chinese zodiac, including the Lychee Blossom Martini, Kowloon Cosmo, Hainan Smuggler, Gunpowder, South of the River, and Silk Road Old Fashioned. The wine list focuses on food-friendly bottles from France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and California, supported by a focused selection of beer and sparkling wines.
The name Canton Disco comes from Yu’s childhood memories of his father, who was once an aspiring actor before entering the restaurant business. Yu remembers being a kid with actors and singers gathering in the basement of their family home, where a disco ball hung overhead and the space always felt lively and full of surprises. That sense of celebration and late-night fun is something the team hopes guests feel as the evening unfolds.
Dinner service will begin Wednesday, February 18, and the daytime café portion of the concept is expected to open in mid-April.”
