“Metro is installing nearly 200 new bus shelters at Metro-owned locations as part of a multi-year capital project. Construction began at Twinbrook station last month and continues at Shady Grove, as of Jan. 5.
Over the next several months, bus shelters at Shady Grove will be replaced two at a time with either single or double shelter designs, based on the number of people each stop serves per day. All bus routes will continue to service Shady Grove; however, bus stops will be temporarily reassigned within the bus loop area to accommodate this work. Metro personnel will be on-site to help customers locate their bus stop. The Shady Grove east Kiss and Ride will be closed during bus shelter construction.
The new bus shelters are constructed with translucent walls and roofs, LED lighting, and are ADA-compliant to ensure accessibility for all customers. They are made from commercially available aluminum, providing durable protection and improved shading while reducing costs compared with custom stainless-steel designs.
The stations included in this phase of the Bus Shelter Replacement Project are: Medical Center, Grosvenor, Wheaton, Glenmont, and New Carrollton.
In the first phase of the project, 33 shelters were replaced at Fort Totten, Brookland-CUA, Rhode Island Av., and Addison Road stations.
