“Dear PoPville,

As I commuted downtown this morning from the SW waterfront, on the fourth day of the snow emergency and the third day of school being closed, I couldn’t help but notice that everyone I saw on my way in was either:

a) on their way somewhere,
b) helping with snow & ice removal, or
c) the National Guard, standing around doing nothing.

This morning, within two blocks of where they were “patrolling” (standing in a circle) in Chinatown, I saw multiple crosswalks that were impassable for children or the elderly, that five minutes with a shovel might have cleared.

As I offered a hand to an older woman (who didn’t have the boots to be climbing a slush pile), I did remember one difference between what the Guard was doing today versus when I saw them Monday and yesterday.

Today they were standing around inside the metro station, and were out of the cold.”
