Thanks to Paul and others for passing on from one of the founders of Compass Coffee:

“I started Compass Coffee after returning from the Marine Corps because I wanted to build something meaningful for Washington, D.C. A place rooted in community, service, and real good coffee for the people who show up for this city every day.
For many years, the rhythms of Washington supported that vision. Downtown was busy, people gathered in offices and cafés every day, and Compass grew alongside the city.
That rhythm has changed in lasting ways since 2020. Foot traffic downtown has not returned, work patterns are different, and the economics of running urban cafés look very different than they did even a few years ago. Like many local restaurants and cafés, we reached a moment where we had to confront that reality honestly.
Today, Compass is restructuring parts of the business and intends to use the Chapter 11 process to position the company for long-term viability. Our cafés remain open, and we are refocusing on our strongest locations so we can protect the heart of Compass rather than stretch the business beyond what the current environment can support.
This has been a difficult chapter. The decisions we’re making reflect the reality of this moment in Washington and are about ensuring Compass can continue serving the city with the same real good coffee and sense of community that have defined us from the beginning.
Over the last decade, Compass has grown to 25 cafés across the DMV. Our original 7th Street café never closed for a single day (4125 days and counting)! Our spaces have been the setting for first dates that turned into marriages, interviews that led to dream jobs, and everyday moments shared over millions of cups of coffee. We have supplied the White House through multiple presidential administrations, supported countless community causes, shipped coffee to all 50 states and to troops deployed overseas, and helped thousands of people navigate first jobs, in-between jobs, and next chapters.
I am deeply proud of our team for their professionalism and resilience, and grateful to our customers who continue to show up for one another and for this city.
Compass will continue operating throughout the Chapter 11 process and serving customers across the DMV. We remain focused on stabilizing the business, supporting its team, and emerging with a structure aligned to the city’s current economic reality.”
