Ed. Note: When I asked about the two similar issues at Albermarle and 38th, DDOT assured me they weren’t permanent. I have heard no updates about how much longer those will be there or why they have been there so long. I continue to NOT hold my breath…
“Dear PoPville,
There has been a steel plate on 2nd St NW between Missouri Ave and Jefferson Street for about two years — I’m certain of the timing because it appeared shortly after we moved into our home. I’ve tried to get it taken care of via 311 requests, our ANC rep, and councilmember to no avail.
The primary 311 ticket dates back to March 2025. First, it took a while to determine who is responsible for the plate and, therefore, responsible for the repair. The steel plate is apparently marked for Washington Gas, but they refused ownership. The city eventually removed the plate and found a sinkhole in the roadway. They did a dye test with DC water (not really sure what this does), and it was negative. After that, 311 closed the ticket, saying that they referred it to DDOT for roadway repair. I think I have submitted two or more follow-up 311 requests for that repair, and yes, the steel plate is still there. I recently tried to call DDOT but got disconnected after being on hold for a while.
(Below) is a screenshot of the original 311 submission + comments.”
