“Any idea what’s going on at Calvert & Connecticut?”

Update from NPS: “Record of Determination for a Partial and Temporary Closure of a Portion of Parkland Southwest of the Intersection of Connecticut Ave NW and Calvert St NW

Pursuant to 36 CFR 1.5(a), Rock Creek Park, a unit of the National Park Service, is temporarily closing a portion of park land southwest of the intersection of Connecticut Avenue NW and Calvert Street NW to protect public safety during the staging of equipment for pedestrian safety improvement work on the Taft Bridge. Specifically, from 7:00 am Monday March 3, 2025 through 5:00 pm Friday October 30, 2026, the grass area southwest of the intersection of Connecticut Avenue NW and Calvert Street NW will be fully closed to all public use. Pedestrian traffic on the paved pathway in this area will be temporarily detoured to the existing sidewalks paralleling those streets. The closed areas will be accessible only to National Park Service employees, employees of the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), and approved DDOT contractors. The temporary closure of this grass area and pedestrian pathway is necessary to protect public safety. Less restrictive measures are not possible given the need to close the area to protect public safety during work to improve pedestrian safety on the Taft Bridge.”

“Dear PoPville,

Fencing surrounding more fencing and a bit of lumber on the SW corner. It’s 2025 so unclear if it’s a staging area for something innocuous or for a Trumpian panopticon.

Have you heard anything?”

Another reader asks: “Any idea why they are ripping out the medians at Connecticut and T by the Hilton? It’s making traffic abysmal and seems unrelated to the recover project.”

Could it be construction staging for the deckover down the ave or would that be too far away?

Any other ideas what this could be for?
