Thanks to Megan for sharing the GoFundMe:
“The PTO of Ida B. Wells Middle School and the PSCO of John Lewis Elementary School are reaching out as neighbors and fellow Ward 4 community members who care deeply about the Hernandez family.
On Wednesday, September 3, 2025, after dropping his child off at John Lewis Elementary School, our neighbor and friend was suddenly detained by federal agents on his way to work. He has been held at a detention center in Chantilly, Virginia for one week and has since been moved to a detention center in Texas. His wife has only been able to speak with him twice.
The family has called Petworth home for the past eight years.
Many of you may know them from school, from the neighborhood, or simply from the warmth they bring to our community. They are raising two wonderful children here, and like so many of us, they are building their family’s future in this neighborhood we share.
This situation has shaken them to the core. Beyond the fear and uncertainty, they are now facing urgent and unexpected expenses—legal costs, emergency fees, and everyday household needs that have become overwhelming overnight.
As a community, we can come together to help keep the Hernandez family strong through this crisis. We’re raising funds to make sure Oscar has the legal support he needs and that Sucely and their daughters are not left to shoulder this burden alone.
Every donation, no matter the size, is an act of love and solidarity. It’s a way of telling this family that they are not alone, that Petworth stands with them, and that neighbors take care of one another.
On behalf of the family, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your support means more than words can ever say.”
