Stop Messing with Sonny Bono Park – Heurich House’s gardener, Walter, has a plan and “someone has been cutting down many of Walter’s plants”

20th/New Hampshire and O Street, NW

From the Heurich House Museum:

“As you probably remember, the Heurich House Museum has been taking care of Sonny Bono Park since 2014 when we made an agreement with DPR to manage it. Before then, it was constantly filled with piles of garbage – and by that, I mean MOUNDS of filled trash bags.

In 2015, our staff and a group of dedicated volunteers replanted the park using money we raised for that purpose. Today, the museum’s gardener Walter (recently retired from a career at Dumbarton Oaks) maintains the park on a weekly basis – over time, he has added plants and trees, and he regularly mulches and waters. In the past, people have stolen trees and plants, and over the last month, someone has been cutting down many of Walter’s plants.

Walter’s garden design style is on the whimsical side (see our “Castle Garden” and the tree boxes down Sunderland Place), so I hope whoever cut down the ornamental grasses did it because they were confused and trying to help and not being a menace. If people in the neighborhood do want to help, they can email us at [email protected] and we will connect them with Walter the gardener.”
