“Dear PoPville,
On Sunday, December 8th, I got on at Gallery Place heading towards Shady Grove. It was late afternoon, must’ve been around 4pm. You were the super tall white guy with dark brown hair, about chin length, and glasses. Stepping onto the train, you exchanged a quick word with a woman by the sliding doors. You had to be at least 6’3. Lithe, all limbs, you crossed the metro aisle in two sure strides like Noah spreading the sea, settling into the accessible seats.
I recall how delicately you gathered half your dark hair into a bun, letting the rest frame your jaw, a bit overgrown. You were rocking a lot of rings (silver, I think?), a nice tan coat and loafers. You looked right at me, hands calmly folded, no earbuds in your ear, no phone that I could see. You didn’t break eye contact when I stared back. I couldn’t figure you out. I was the Black girl with long hair sitting diagonal to you in the black leather jacket, thin black scarf and black boots, intermittently checking her phone for no reason but to look away from you. You stayed on the train past Cleveland Park. I have no clue if you were interested in me, but I was interested in you and I wished I’d said as much. If I’m not too late, I’d love to grab coffee with you sometime!”
