“Mayor Bowser will present former Commander’s cornerback Darrell Green with the Key to the City.
From 10:00 AM-3:00 PM this Saturday, October 19th, Commanders players, local high school football teams, Department of Parks and Recreation football program participants, and community members will gather at Franklin Park (1332 I Street, NW) to celebrate the career and legacy of Mr. Green.
Darrell Green played his entire career, spanning 20 seasons, as a cornerback in Washington, DC. He is considered by sports enthusiasts to be one of the greatest cornerbacks to have ever played in the NFL and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008. Though Mr. Green was the last player selected in the first round of the 1983 NFL draft by the Commanders, the first time he touched the ball, during a pre-season game against the Atlanta Falcons, he returned a punt 61 yards for a touchdown. Mr. Green is a two-time Super Bowl champion, the 1996 NFL Man of the Year, the four-time winner of the NFL’s Fastest Man competition, and the only undefeated multiple winner in NFL history.
The Key to the City is a symbol of civic recognition and gratitude and is considered the highest honor an individual can receive from Washington, DC. Darrell Green is an honorary Washingtonian, and we are grateful for his enduring contributions as a sports legend in our community.
The program will include a presentation from a middle school marching band and cheer squad, and a performance from Mayor’s Arts Award winner Backyard Band. Also on site will be a Commanders Fan Zone, two kids zones, and an agency resource area.”
