“Northstar Tutoring’s mission is to help low-income and underserved K-12th grade students in the D.C. area reach their full potential by overcoming barriers to personal and academic success. By matching students with their own volunteer tutor/mentor we strive to provide the free academic support and personal attention that these students may not otherwise have.
We are excited to be starting several new partnerships for the 2024-2025 school year (locations/times below as well as a virtual option)! Volunteers will work with the same student for the duration of the school year and will help their student complete their homework and supplemental materials provided by Northstar. In addition to tutoring sessions, volunteers are encouraged (but not required) to take their students on mentoring activities. These mentoring activities range from going to the movies or visiting a museum, to attending sporting events or meeting at a library for extra tutoring sessions. Students range from Kindergarten to 12th grade and volunteers are encouraged to request a specific age range they are interested in being partnered with.
Please note – we are also looking for volunteers to help with onsite management during tutoring. These volunteers will help Northstar staff with a number of tasks including signing in volunteers, bringing students to their assigned classrooms, helping to organize materials and supplies, and passing out snacks. Please let us know if you are interested in volunteering in this capacity!
If you are interested please reach out to Jennifer Townsend at [email protected]
