“DCPS – no placement for special needs kids”

“Dear PoPville,

I have a 5 year old son with special needs. We had his IEP meeting August 9th where he was switched from a general classroom to a special education classroom. We were told that DC would be in touch with telling us his placement of school, since our local neighborhood school does not have special ed classrooms. Today is 8/29, the 4th day of school – and my kiddo still does not have a placement.

When you call the DCPS central office, they tell you to contact the placement office. When you call the placement office, it goes to voicemail and the mailbox is full.

This boils my blood as who knows how many kids – especially special needs kiddos – and their families are impacted. My son is completely fine but I feel like I need to advocate because if I don’t, who will.”
