What the… “Members will soon be using facial recognition to gain entry to the club at the front door”

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to share some news about MINT in DuPont Circle because I’m curious what other readers think (and to see if there’s anything we can collectively to do make MINT change its policy).

On July 2, MINT members got the following email:

Next level member access is coming!

Members will soon be using facial recognition to gain entry to the club at the front door; this will automatically check-in active members.

Staffing at the front desk will remain the same. This system is being implemented to further increase safety and security in our constant efforts to preserve and enhance your MINTexperience.

In response to many of us reaching out with concerns about this new and vague mandatory facial recognition, we got the email below, which essentially says they are moving forward with facial recognition and for members to opt out, it will “unfortunately have an additional fee and be less convenient for members.” There’s been no way to provide input in this process.

It feels like there has to be an option that isn’t giving my gym biometric data or paying extra to not have to do that. But are we asking too much?”
