July 8th: “Brookland Arts Walk to Host First Annual Tirgan Market, a Persian Summer Festival”

From an email:

“The Brookland Arts Walk will commemorate the ancient Zoroastrian summer festival, known as Tirgan, with its first annual Tirgan Market on Saturday, July 8 from 3pm to 7pm. The community-wide event will celebrate the summer season with local artists and makers, delicious food, and live music.

Tirgan is the fourth ancient Persian festival of seasons – joining Norooz (Spring), Yalda (Winter) and Mehregan (Autumn) – historically dedicated to ushering in a healthy harvest and warding off drought. It is traditionally celebrated by dancing, splashing water, reciting poetry, and consuming delicious foods, like spinach soup and saffron rice pudding called sholezard.

“Tirgan is a time to come together to honor and celebrate mother nature and the summer season,” said Tirgan Market co-organizer and Kucheh Studio owner Mina M. Jafari. “The Tirgan Market is a perfect place to connect with our community and celebrate life through beautiful and diverse local art and culture.”

The event will feature live performances by Brooklyn-based sibling duo Sarah and Ehsan Khatami, multi-instrumentalist Kamyar Arsani, and dance performances by Yekta Kamali.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
