“Festival celebrates Persian/Iranian New Year – March 18”

From an email:

“A festival celebrating the Iranian New Year/Spring Equinox will be held from noon until 4 pm, Saturday March 18 at Hook Hall.

The Norooz Market (Norooz is ancient Persian celebration of the spring equinox or new year) will host 24 vendors – Iranian, Black, Brown small businesses – exhibiting at the event and selling their pastries, cookies, pottery, food, all in celebration of their culture.

Presenting this event is Koocheh DC. Koocheh means “the alley” in Farsi, and is known as a bustling outdoor marketplace where people gather to shop & socialize within their communities. Koocheh DC was founded by local businesswoman Niloo Nour, who is also one of the vendors. Her goal is to foster some of that Community while also spotlighting Iranian-owned small businesses in the DMV.

Niloo says “With the revolution in Iran, amongst other things happening to people in places like Afghanistan, we wanted a place we could all come together as Iranians, Afghans, humans, to just BE, while sharing & honoring our respective heritages and rich cultures with the DMV. Maybe we can teach the public a thing or two about our cultures through our passions (our businesses) or through the conversations that PopUp markets naturally spark.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
