“Down in the Reeds is a day-long Fall celebration and Music Festival. Our 2022 Festival is happening on Saturday October 8th from 11am – 7pm at The Parks at Walter Reed.”

“The Down in the Reeds Festival is 2 weeks away! This whole day fall music festival at The Parks at Walter Reed will feature two stages of live music and workshops, an interactive art and music collaboration space, interactive art for the family, lawn games, a live art and murals, a historical scavenger hunt, local art vendors and amazing local food and beverage.
The Festival is FREE but RSVPs are required here.

Zenith Community Arts Foundation – The Mobile Woodshop

Location: The Arts Plaza
Time: All Day
Zenith Community Arts Foundation’s (ZCAF) Mobile Woodshop is an experiential classroom on wheels to teach students the fundamentals of woodworking. This unique shop will be set up next to the Arts Plaza during the festival.
By bringing the tools out of the classroom and into communities, attendees can practice their skills, learn with experienced woodworkers and artists, improve their communities by helping with neighbors’ homes or larger neighborhood projects, develop entrepreneurial skills, and foster a sense of accomplishment and pride.

Negritude 22 Synesthesia Symposia
Location: Lucid Gathering Space (near intersection of Cameron and Main St)
Time: 12:30pm and 2:30pm (each workshop approx 30-40 min)
This workshop is centered on working with shapes and colors intuitively. Two musicians (pianist will play a short tune note by note and attendees will assign a shape and color to the note. At the end, the artists will play the song in its entirety while attendees paint their picture and bring it to life.
Negritude 22 is a young Black creative led organization dedicated to boosting artists of all disciplines to wider audiences by creating multi-disciplinary networking events, workshops, art exhibitions, concerts, and so much more. Come be inspired.

The Historic Walter Reed Scavenger Hunt
Location: All Around Campus

What began as rural farmland was transformed into the U.S. Army’s flagship medical center serving soldiers wounded in all of America’s wars for over 100 years. Before it closed, history marched through the halls of Walter Reed Army Medical Center where presidents, and privates mingled in their hospital gowns, and whole new fields of medical study were discovered.
With the “Discover Historic Walter Reed Scavenger Hunt,” you’ll learn about the legacy of this pioneering medical center and significant moments in its history as you explore this beautiful campus.

Family Crafts: Make Your Own Musical Instruments

Celebrate the day’s musical entertainment with your own musical instrument! Join others for a self-guided arts and craft activity to make your own instruments from common, everyday objects. Volunteers will be nearby to assist you. Your one-of-a-kind instrument can be used throughout the festival to bring the power of music right to your fingertips!

Community Mural by Tammy Barnes
Location: Gazebo
Time: All Day

Join your fellow festival-goers to bring to life a large scale visual artwork highlighting percussion instruments and the healing power of music. Our ‘Down in the Reeds’ community mural is led by local muralist, Tammy Barnes, and is geared towards people of all ages. Materials provided and no painting/artistic experience required! The painting starts at 2:30p and will continue until the image is complete. All mural contributors have the opportunity to memorialize their participation with their signature on a plaque that will accompany the mural in its final exhibit space.

Tammy Barnes is a muralist, painter, and upcycle artist who lives and works in Washington, DC. Tammy teaches art to children and youth in the greater Baltimore, MD area at the Chesapeake Arts Center. She is the in-house chalkboard artist for a locally owned and operated bakery in Washington, DC, Bread Furst. Her mural work is featured inside Neval Thomas Elementary in DC’s Ward 7, and in DC area restaurants owned and operated by Tryst Trading Company.
