Before moving to its current location in Bethesda, Maryland, Walter Reed Army Medical Center occupied this massive 113 acre campus from 1909 to 2011. During its 102 years, it grew from 80 beds to 5500 rooms while serving tens of thousands of wounded troops and veterans from WWI to Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. Many presidents were treated at this hospital including President Eisenhower who died here.
A massive redevelopment will transform this campus to 2100 residential units, hotels, retail and grocery stores, and Howard University clinics. Children’s National Hospital has also purchased several buildings that will be used for pediatric research and innovation as well as outpatient care facilities.
