“Dear PoPville,
I’m trying to get the word out about a hit and run that occurred early Sunday morning around 12:46 AM to see if anyone has any information. I was crossing Columbia Rd. at the intersection of Quarry Rd. from South to North (from the Federalist pig side to Quarry rd) with my dog Tiger Lily. There is a well marked crosswalk with three different signs reminding drivers that there is a crosswalk and that it is DC law to stop for pedestrians. We looked to the left and the car stopped, started to cross, and the car coming from 16th street seemed to be stopping, then didn’t. The car hit Tiger head on at about 20 mph, then hit the breaks and I was hit very slightly. She is a small 45 lb. dog and was propelled about 10 feet up and 15 feet out before hitting the ground on the other side of Quarry rd; the leash was ripped out of my hand on impact. Fortunately nothing was broken, but she was in so much shock that she took off in a sprint, making it across several more streets almost to Woodley park, where some fellow citizens caught her on the Calvert street bridge. Several Adams Morgan citizens jumped in to help and we had a small army of us chasing after to catch her. I am so thankful to those neighbors.
Because I was chasing the dog, I did not get detail on the car, but it stopped briefly before taking off. A fellow neighbor believes the license plate was either 519-UTV or 519-ITV. It looked like a sedan – maybe a prius, and also appeared to have passengers in the backseat.
We are very fortunate that Tiger Lily is going to be okay – she has quite a bit of roadrash in several places and she is in a lot of pain from the impact, but overall she is lucky. I imagine she will be skittish and afraid for some time.
I am not sure what kind of person would hit a dog (and a person for that matter), in the middle of a crosswalk, and then flee the scene but would like to see this person caught so they are not driving around on our streets anymore.
There were several people and cars around at the time of the incident. I am hoping someone will see this and be able to provide some more information so we can catch the guy. If you have information, please contact Hillary at [email protected] or contact MPD regarding case number 18142771.”
