“I don’t get all of that money. If you call and tell them you changed your mind and give me cash instead, they’ll give you your tip back.”

“Dear PoPville,

I just had an exchange with the grocery delivery person that caught me off guard and was wanting to know if the PoPville universe had any similar stories to tell?

I’ve been using Peapod for about a month and tonight was our 3rd delivery. The previous 2 have been great; timely delivery and the last person in particular was really nice.

I’ve tipped the previous 2 deliveries on my credit card and that wasn’t a problem until tonight. When I told this delivery person that I’d put a tip on my card for him, he said “I don’t get all of that money. If you call and tell them you changed your mind and give me cash instead, they’ll give you your tip back.”

It was late and I was just like, “Yeah okay. Have a nice night.” I realize now that he was probably referring to taxes (I guess), but I just don’t always have cash. I mean, I started using grocery delivery for the convenience, which to me includes credit card tipping.

Long story longer, I had to call their customer service because they left one item off my delivery. I told them about my experience and asked them to not send that driver again. They were very nice and empathetic, but they said there was nothing they could do about removing me from that drivers route.

This exchange has turned me off to grocery delivery. Guess I’m back to schlepping bags.”
