Thanks to a reader for passing on this press release from the Department of Defense:

“The Armed Forces Retirement Home (AFRH) hosted an Industry Day, March 19, to seek ways to leverage private-sector, multi-use development of 80 acres of Washington, D.C. property operated by AFRH to create lasting revenue for the Home.

“Our objective is to generate long-term income to support the Home’s mission of caring for our enlisted veteran residents,” said AFRH Chief Executive Officer Steve Rippe. “We’re looking to industry for creative solutions to maximize revenue to the Armed Forces Retirement Home and improve the community as a whole.

More than 100 organizations from across the real estate industry spectrum as well as community organizations attended the AFRH Industry Day event. Attendees came together to consider opportunities for better use of the 35 existing buildings and green space surrounding the Home, while preserving and reusing the site’s significant historic and cultural resources.

The AFRH is moving forward aggressively with its plans for private-sector development, with the goal of ensuring the Home’s financial stability for future generations of retired military personnel and to make capital improvements to care for new generations of veterans.

The AFRH is working with the General Services Administration (GSA) to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) in the spring of 2018 and select a master developer whose submission best meets the criteria and objectives as set forth in the RFP.

The AFRH will host site visits in April with an additional Industry Day to follow.
