DC Scoop, “free ice cream extravaganza”, at Union Market’s Dock 5 Saturday

“Over 3,000 Washingtonians turned out for the sixth annual DC Scoop event in 2016.”

From a press release:

“Union Market, northeast D.C.’s vibrant retail and culinary district, invites local families, friends and ice cream fans out for the seventh annual DC Scoop event on Saturday, July 15 from 1 to 4pm. The highly-anticipated, free ice cream extravaganza will take place at Dock 5 where local ice cream vendors will put their best scoops forward to win the coveted “Best Ice Cream” title, as voted on by attendees.

Frozen treat fanatics at DC Scoop will enjoy a wide variety of free samples and servings for purchase, including gelato, ice cream sandwiches, popsicles and soda shoppe-style scoops. Although Union Market’s resident ice cream factory Dolcezza will not be competing this year, the gelato shop will be on-site for samples and purchase alongside several savory food trucks.

Trickling Springs Creamery will also be participating in DC Scoop this year, with a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into making everyone’s favorite frozen desert, from what happens at a dairy farm to how to make ice cream.

MilkCult owners Ed Cornell and Patrick Griffin took home “Best Ice Cream” last year for their Coconut Kaffir Ice Cream on Toasted Japanese Milk Bread with Fruity Pebbles, and this year, the quirky local duo is looking forward to capturing a second consecutive DC Scoop title.

“It feels great to participate together with such a community of committed local ice cream producers. The hard work that everyone does sets such a high bar,” said Cornell and Griffin. “We look forward to drinking the sweet, milky, and delicious blood of our rivals again this year.”
