You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in DC.

Unknown: I could upgrade to first class if I had an extra $1000 lying around! (I was willing to pay if it was under $500 since I travel so infrequently anyway, but that’s crazy.) Someday I’ll do it just for kicks.
    .
Unknown: Last day. I’ll miss you guys and I can’t wait to see everyone in July!

    • Irving Streete

      Bon voyage!!!

      No mid-priced business class option?

      • FridayGirl

Economy Plus, but meh. At least I have an aisle seat back in Economy with everyone else so I’ll deal. (I’m getting too greedy. Haha.)

Revel: Kayaked along the Potomac last night. We really do live in a beautiful city, especially as the sun sets along the water and trees.
Rave: Planning travel in July to see friends and family.
Rave: All the book recommendations from the PoPulace yesterday. Can’t wait to dig in!

Rant: sitting through a long graduation ceremony
Rave: Bruce is graduating high school
Rave: lunch at Central to celebrate

    • Emmaleigh

Niece is graduating, not Bruce. Weird auto correct.

      • Emmaleigh

Well, maybe Bruce is graduating, I don’t know.

        • SinSA

Congratulations to your niece! And Bruce!

        • SWChick

lol Bruce may just be graduating as well.

      • DCbyDay

hahaha i love this autocorrect. Congrats to Bruce (maybe) and your niece (definitely)!

    • ShawThroughtheHeart

The Kit Kat dessert there is reallllllyy good.

      • Emmaleigh

I’m getting the pistachio creme brûlée, but a kit Kay dessert sounds divine.

  • CapitalDame

Rave: Have some great ideas for things for my tweenage niece to do while in DC visiting from Michigan, thanks so Popville! Always open to more, though! Current plans are mount vernon, madame tussauds, shopping in georgetown, 3d printing factory in National Harbor.
Rant: its going to be in the upper 90’s while she’s in town!
Rave: saw so many displays of human kindness this morning on my commute.

    • AJSE

Not sure how you’re getting to National Harbor but I love taking visitors on the ferry from Georgetown to Alexandria for brunch. The ferry also goes from Georgetown to National Harbor, and it has great views!

    • ShawThroughtheHeart

Glad to hear about those acts of kindness!

    • DCbyDay

if it’s going to be that hot try kayaking by the Key Bridge!

      • CapitalDame

Had the same idea… the challenge is that my dad is coming too and not mobile enough for that. Mount Vernon will actually be a big stretch for him too, but he’s always wanted to go and he’s not exactly getting MORE mobile.

        • DCbyDay

ah, yes kayaking is not ideal for those less mobile… maybe one of those dinner cruises! Although admittedly, I’ve never done one.

          • anon

depends on what is causing the immobility. I’ve been off hiking, walking far, and biking due to a knee problem, but kayaking with it is easy and fun (though getting in out of a kayak, never something I did gracefully, is all the more ungainly when I can’t use my knee as I used to, so that in itself might preclude kayaking if he has any dignity.)

        • anon

When you get to Mount Vernon, and there’s a really, really long line, don’t be discouraged – go to the front of the line and ask to be let in sooner due to your father’s difficulty waiting in line. (They let us in ahead of the line just because my very mobile out-of-town friends had to be back in the city to get their transportation home, which ticketed travel plans precluded them waiting in line for a few hours – that was really nice of the staff there, and it wouldn’t even have occurred to me to ask.)

    • The website for madame tussauds is still up – but I kind of remember it closing – so do be sure.

  • SinSA

    Rave: That beautiful picture!

Rave: My refrigerator is being delivered today. I’m very excited to re-stock it.

Rave: My good friend is coming to visit me a week from today!

Rave: I’m in a weirdly good mood and hopeful that nothing happens to ruin it.

    • Tall E

What fridge did you get? I may be on the market soon.

      • SinSA

I got the fridge that fit in the space height wise, (so not necessarily the fridge that I super wanted, but it does what it’s supposed to do):
Sears Kenmore Elite side-by-side (Kenmore Elite 51823 21.9 cu. ft. Side-by-Side Refrigerator)

  • textdoc

Rave: Tuned in to C-SPAN (90.1 FM) for the hearing.
Rant: Leading up to the hearing, inane comments from callers. I’d turn the radio off, but I’m afraid I’d forget to turn it back on again and miss the beginning of the hearing.

  • hiphopanonymous

Rave: Such a great night! Had friends over that I hadn’t seen since January AND broke in our new grill! Forgot how much I love a good char on my hotdog. Also made some super good sweet potato fries (albeit in the oven).
    Rave: Livestreaming Comey’s testimony.
Rave: Many thanks to whoever mentioned the podcast “You Must Remember This”. Currently listening to the seris about Charles Manson – super interesting!
Rant: Coworker – former longtime DOJ employee – has no trust for the newly appointed FBI director. I’ll trust him on this.

    • Emmaleigh

That was me! I really enjoyed the Dead Blondes series too. I’m currently listening to Six Degrees of Joan Crawford. I love all the old Hollywood stuff on You Must Remember This.

      • skj84

Love “You Must Remember This”. The Dead Blonde series was great.

    • houseintherear

Just got into that podcast thanks to Popville! Unfortunately I do not enjoy the host’s voice because it feels like she OVERRRANNUNCIATESSS everything, but otherwise it’s really great.

  • Andie302

Rave: Date night last night with lots of good food and putting finishing touches on wedding stuff
    Rant: Not enough sleep!
Rave: Work/side hustle things are going very well!
Rave: On book 4 of the Harry Potter series. I’ve never read any of them or seen any of the movies and I am really enjoying them! I don’t know that I’ll be able to pull away from them to add back other books, but I’ve only been at it about 2 weeks and I’m halfway through…so I guess that wouldn’t be the end of the world!

    • LittleBluePenguin

Aw! love your raves, especially your reading raves – I loved those books, they really are just such good fun!

    • hiphopanonymous

      Number Four is my favorite!

    • Pixie

Ah I wish I could read Harry Potter again for the first time!

  • LittleBluePenguin

    Rave: lovely weather today
Rant: Looking ahead a next week, the weather looks appalling
Rant: My nice big tree is gone.
Rave? I guess it’s safer for the house, now.
Rave: Talked with bff last night, she wanted to let me know where they were going to be stationed since they just found out – nowhere super exotic, but should be fairly easily reached and a neat new place to explore, whenever they move and settle in!

  • topscallop

Rave: had a lovely Google hangout with my four besties from high school last night. We don’t talk often enough but when we get together it’s like no time has passed…and yet everyone has grown and evolved so much and are doing awesome things. We’re planning a lake house trip together later in the summer, a sort-of bachelorette thing (the men-folk are invited too) that is going to be just wonderful
Rave/Rant: so sore from yesterday morning’s class at the gym, but in a good way! If I keep going back to that one I’ll have buns of steel in no time
Rave: my supervisor acknowledged the work I’ve been doing that is someone else’s responsibility and asked me to keep track of when that happens as she can use it in pushing up the chain for a change in how things are managed
    Rant: I’m tired

  • dcd

Rant: Found out a friend of mine from college passed away. 44 years old, died of a heart attack while playing basketball with his son. He leaves behind a wife and 2 kids. And he and his wife had previously lost another child, about 8 years ago. Just heartbreaking.
Rant: Need to keep going back to the gym, and eating better. Damn you, Baked ‘n Wired. You’re a saboteur.

    • HaileUnlikely

Very sorry to hear, and that is so sad and so frightening.

      • Tall E

I’m so sorry for your loss.

  • Tall E

Rave: not a superhero movie fan but saw Wonder Woman last night and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Rant: continuing knee pain. Fell straight on my rt knee cap while backpacking and more than two weeks later it still hurts plus feels less stable and I can’t bend it back as far as normal. Debating if I’m impatient or need to see a dr. Made an appt for next week in case it’s still not great by then.

If your insurance company has it, you might call the 800-number for talking to a nurse. (Blue Cross has a number like that and I think most other insurers do as well.) They run through a series of questions, including having you try things and tell them how it feels, and then let you know what action to take, like getting an appointment ASAP, or rest and ice, or something in between. Also, sometimes calling your primary care physician’s office will give you a feel for what to now.

I had this issue from a fall on my knee – lots of pain, difficulty bending it. After three or four months, it got much worse. Physical therapy for a few months then helped a lot – got it to somewhere between 90-95 functional. Had an X-ray first to get the PT prescribed – I could feel it was chondromalacia, as the kneecap was pointing off to the side. Is only 95% better – falling on it again this year didn’t help a lot. I also had a lot of swelling in that knee – acupuncture reduced this for me in the short term, lasting a few days, but for a long time it swelled a lot if I walked only a mile. Is finally not swelling when I walk that far, and the pain is minimal, but it has been almost two years since I first fell.
      .
I was able to completely fix this same problem (chondromalacia, pain, swelling) when I first got it from falls on both knees with just a few months of PT about 15 years ago. If it doesn’t get totally better this time (it sure has taken longer, and I’d really like to get back to hiking and biking again), I may get an MRI to see if there’s anything else going on in there (though I may be into arthritis territory with it now with advancing age, so stem cell treatment may be to way to go if and when I next address it with more medical intervention.)
      .
PT can probably do a lot of good for this – it’s always the place I start, rather than getting steroids injections, surgery (that may or may not help), or taking painkillers (sometimes you have to ask doctors to prescribe PT) -especially as with my kneecaps not pointing straight, I could easily tell it was a the old kneecap alignment issue (you may not have that, or may have other things going on in your knee, or both). Good luck!
      .
In the meantime, don’t wear any kind of heels – even low ones really hurt my knees and made the problem worse – or other shoes that don’t properly support your arches that are really comfortable for your feet – it makes a big difference in how your knees align and feel.

  • Revel: had a blast with the kids at the end of year picnic
Rant? Kids brought enough chips and cookies for every man, woman, and child in this school
    Revel: 3.5 more days
Rant: still don’t know my assignment for next year yet

  • MadMax

Rave: If you haven’t seen Vicente Fox’s video address to POTUS I implore you to watch it.
