You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in DC.

Rant: Anyone else weirded out by the NSA report that was leaked? There doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of coverage about it besides about the arrest of the woman who leaked it. Something just doesn’t smell right.

    • Julia Vipsania

No. There’s basically nothing in that report that wasn’t already circulated (and even published) in the public domain. I’m as bleeding heart liberal as you can get, but what she did was idiotic and useless.

      • textdoc

I thought the info about the Russians having hacked into voting-related software was new, no?
        .
Up until now, we knew that the Russians were hacking and releasing DNC e-mails, etc. with the goal of shifting public opinion against Hillary, but we weren’t yet aware (I thought?) that they’d been attempting to interfere with the actual processes of registering voters or tabulating votes.

        • Julia Vipsania

No. None of this is new. The original unclassified IC report issued shortly after the election (or was it inauguration? I have no sense of time anymore, everything feels like ten thousand years) stated exactly that, but emphasized they didn’t have evidence of successful interference. There was never any doubt about responsibility, either.

Leaking sensitive or classified information is never ever ever a good life decision, but this kid is going to jail for something the world already knew. What a dolt. Then again, based on her name I think her parents should serve at least 15% of her sentence.

          • Formerly ParkViewRes

“Then again, based on her name I think her parents should serve at least 15% of her sentence.” LOLOLOL

Yeah, not sure what she thought was going to happen by releasing the classified information. Also, not exactly sure why/how she had access. She was a linguist in the Air Force prior to this contracting job.

          • I Dont Get It

I don’t agree with what she did but I went to her Facebook page this morning and damn, the interwebs can be brutal!

          • Ian

Yes, it is new. This provides much more detail (or the proof that many Trump supporters are demanding) and is classified at SCI for a reason.

          • Ink Dots

Agree with Julia, she threw her life away for little gain. It wasn’t new information, and the “reactions of national security experts” are from former community members giving cable news quotes to stay relevant. There is a lot to be concerned about, but this girl wasn’t the sharpest cookie – she used her personal gmail account to leak and passed the information on color-printed paper which just left an easy trace.

          • Ian

Please explain how this highly classified and detailed explanation of GRU interference in our election is not new or important information.

        • anon

          +1

Reactions from national security experts appear yo be mixed with many alarmed by what is, in fact, new information.

      • NH Ave Hiker

It did establish, without caveats, that GRU was responsible though. I find it interesting, at least.

Rave: friendliness of folks at the gym yesterday during peak hours when we were all waiting for the same equipment.
Rave: it is the time of year when all of my favorite berries are on sale at the grocery store
Neither: i’m really curious to see what goes into the space formerly occupied by Tortilla Coast on P street

  • skj84

Rave: The roommate who i’ve been clashing with is moving out.
Rant: We now need to find a new tenant by July 1st. I’m out of town for a week starting July 17th which is going to make showings super difficult. We have another roommate who can help but still. I don’t like not being involved. Not to mention most of the furniture in the house belongs to her.
    Rave: Vacation in two weeks!!!

  • Anon for this…

Sad: I’m having a chemical pregnancy. It’s super early so I wouldn’t even have known had it not been for the monitoring, but it still sucks.
Rave? This was the first attempt so I know I can get pregnant? I just hope it doesn’t happen again.

    • artemis

I had one as well. The process of trying to get (and stay) pregnant is fraught with so many conflicting emotions. I don’t think I was quite prepared for the emotional roller coaster each month brought. Please be kind and gentle with yourself. Hugs to you.

      • Anon for this…

I agree it’s quite the emotional roller coaster and I was not prepared either. Thanks.

  • Rant: I think I’ve created a rift in the neighborhood. I told friendly guy A (FGA) about the guy who followed me and last night friendly guy B (FGB) stopped to ask me what was going on with the following thing, but he didn’t hear it from FGA. FGB said he would take care of it, but I urged him not to do anything to make anyone upset because we all need to get along, being neighbors and all, and he agreed, but what is he planning to do?
Rant: why did I say anything and now I feel bad for the guy who followed me (I know, right?) because he probably feels like this new(ish) b!tch is making him unwelcome in his neighborhood
Rant: DOG’s arthritis is getting worse
Rave: at least I’m not in a bad mood

    • Question: I know a bunch of people went to Maine last year. I’m going to Portland, Acadia, and also Campobello Island. What are your must dos? I’m camping on Isle au Haut (Duck Island) and at Seawall campgdround while in Acadia.

      • sarracenia

Near Portland: candlepin bowling (there are several alleys)

Near Campobello, the small herring smokehouse museum in Lubec is interesting, and the Quoddy Head lighthouse/easternmost point in the US is worth a small detour

      • For Portland: Allagash brewery (so awesome), and the cryptozoology museum is something kinda of quirky that is pretty fun. If you like sports, taking in a Sea Dogs game is also a blast (minor league baseball).

    • ShawThroughtheHeart

Those things are tough, and while discretion can be key, you can’t spend too much time worrying about echo chambers. Continue to treat well and the ledger will balance out.

    • topscallop

Please do NOT feel bad about telling the guy who followed you to leave you alone! He needs to understand that unwelcome attention is unacceptable. Maybe FGB is a Popville reader?
      .
On a separate note, at least once a week we talk about how great DOG is. Sometimes this takes the following form: we wake up, fiance throws an arm over me, snuggles in, and whispers, “I miss Otis.”

      • Awwwwwwwww
That is the cutest thing! Otis misses you guys too.
He still has the baseball he stole.

  • anon

Rave: the cosmic, soul-enriching joy my toddler son and baby daughter bring to me. There’s just nothing like it. Smile. This is heaven.

Rant: I miss happy hours, sleeping in, travel, not doing laundry 24/7 and anything remotely approaching quality time with my wife. Sigh. This is lonely.

    • dcgator

      :D

  • idontgetit

Rant: I publicly fat-shamed a stranger’s dog last night. No dog deserves to be called “Snausage”.
    Rave: This weather although
Rant: I have to adult today and put on clothes and go to the office near the mythical “Mosaic District”.

    • eggs

I’m confused – did you fat-shame the dog by calling it “Snausage” or did you shame the owner for their dog being fat or did you shame the owner for calling their dog “Snausage”?

      • idontgetit

I *may* have leaned down and while patting this really cute dog said something like “Look at that fat Snausage.”

This may have been said in a high baby voice.

  • skaballet

Rave: My new table arrived yesterday and I managed to assemble it all by myself! It is nice and the perfect size for the space.
Rant: It was completely unnecessary for me to be home for the delivery since UPS left the package by the mail slots. Why they couldn’t do this on Friday when they told me they couldn’t deliver since I wasn’t home I do not know.
Rave: I went to run club last night. It was really hard since I haven’t gone running in a long time, but good. I did not pass out or throw up.

  • Farragut

RANT: A video game I ordered for Allison’s birthday came… in Italian. And not the “It’s-a me, Mario!” fake Italian accent, but actual Italian. Returning that one and reordering.
    .
RAVE: The game “MiniMetro” (available on PC and as a phone/tablet app) finally added a Washington, DC, map! In case you don’t know about this game, it’s an abstract puzzle game where stations of different shapes pop up on a map, and passengers pop up at each station in the shape of the station they want to go to, so you have to connect stations using lines to try to get the most numbers of passengers through. Each “week” in the game, you can add more trains or cars or bridges or whatever. Anyway, they had maps from all around the world (Osaka is my favorite because of the bullet train options), and they finally added DC. Unfortunately it’s pretty far up in the maps (you have to unlock all the previous maps before).
    .
Allison saw me playing the DC map and was laughing because apparently I’m not supposed to make WMATA worse. Whatever! :-P

    • LittleBluePenguin

Ha! So you have to be very advanced in the game to even attempt the clusterf*ck that is DC’s metro system?! Sounds about right!

      • Farragut

I just double checked… it’s the 13th map out of 18, in between Seoul and Cairo. But it’s not TOO bad to get to–to unlock a map you usually just need to get 300-600 passengers (the high scores on some of the maps tend to be in the 2-3000+ range). I do find the PC version a little easier interface than phone/tablet though (tried it on someone’s phone the other day).
        .
Actually as a MiniMetro map, it’s actually not *that* bad on it’s own (I just laid out my network in a decent abstract design, but a terrible realistic one), but they just added this map, Istanbul, and Mumbai a couple months ago so the developers wanted to put them near the end to encourage working through the game (I’m guessing!).

        • Blithe

Rave: Your Rave! After a brief period of being obsessed with MiniMetro, I forgot all about it. I checked it after reading your post and the DC map is already unlocked. So now I have something engaging to do while I wait for the Metro.

    • textdoc

Hahaha at “And not the ‘It’s-a me, Mario!’ fake Italian accent.” :)

      • Farragut

I really admire that when you quoted this, you also changed the original double quotes to single quotes.
        .
Not being facetious, I love that you did that! :-D

        • textdoc

          :)

  • LittleBluePenguin

Rave: Landscapers came by yesterday and mulched / gardened like crazy, it looks beautiful out in my yard now!
Rant: The tree I pointed out to the landlord, that I was hoping was just partially dying, is apparently all dying, and will need to come down. I get extremely sad about the cutting down of trees, even though I know it’s safer this way. Boo!
Rantish? Bringing my older kitty to the vet today, sort of for a checkup but also because I’m worried she might have one of those “older-age” issues with diabetes or her kidneys or thyroid or something. She just seems to be vomiting waaaay more. Not acting sick or anything, but just eating and then throwing it right back up, probably 3-4 times a week. I was going to take her last week but realized I had a meeting, so had to reschedule. There’s part of me that is so nervous but trying to calm myself down.

    • Good luck with the kitty! Hoping it’s something that is easy to treat.

    • textdoc

LBP, is your appointment today with District Vet? They gave me a $20 discount when I went there last week because I put down your name as having referred me. (That was a pleasant surprise — I figured they might give you some kind of bonus for referring me, but I didn’t think I’d get one too!!)
      .
I think I might have misspelled your last name on the referral sheet, though. If they don’t give you a discount when they ring you up, ask them to look into it.

      • textdoc

And fingers crossed for today’s appointment! Hoping that whatever’s up with kitty is not serious and can be easily resolved.

        • LittleBluePenguin

Thanks! And yes, I did get the referral bonus, thanks a ton! Hope your kitty checked out ok!

  • WhoseEar

Rave: Our new condo has a massive private rooftop, only accessible to our unit.
Rant: DCRA code prohibits propane or charcoal grills in the space so we need a natural gas line extension to connect it to a grill. Anyone have recommendations for outdoor kitchen-type work or gas line plumbers?
Rave: Having a gas line up there will keep us from having to carry propane tanks or bags of charcoal up 4 flights of stairs!

  • Rant: pesky newbie teachers who act like they’re in charge of me.

Can I get some tips for Pride this weekend? I have a family member coming to town to participate for the first time, and I want him to get the most out of it.
Obviously we’ll go to the parade… what else is fun and worth seeking out?
    Thanks!

    • Anon

Check the Washington Blade Pride Guide. You’ll find complete listing of events there. If you are going to the parade, I suggest watching it at Dupont Circle — it is the best there. If you are going to the festival, bring sunscreen because there is no shade at all. Most importantly, Enjoy!!

    • Formerly ParkViewRes

I always have fun at the festival on Sunday too.

    • MaryMay

Friday: happy hour at Number Nine/ Trade/ Nellies and then end at Cobalt
Saturday: parade and the official party (get the tickets early) and/ or Town (lines at Town are long, so get there early). Roxxy Andrews is hosting brunch at Urbana (? Double check the official guide)
Sunday: drag brunch at Nellies then head to the Mall for the festival

If into drag shows, ziegfleds/secrets is worth the trek. also, Uproar is a good bar (they also have food!) and Dirty Goose has free vodka on Saturday (plus they just did a revamp of the decor)

      Happy Pride!!!

      • wdc

        Awesome!
I should have mentioned, though, my nephew is underage. No bars for us. And we’ll be hanging with my elementary-school aged kids.
Drag Brunch at Nellie’s: I’d love to do that! How early do you have to get there to have a chance at a table?

        • MaryMay

Get them in advance. Believe you can get them through Nellies website.

Also, the passes for the pit/ closer to the stage at the festival are a good deal. Hope your nephew has a great time!

re: your rave, that sounds amazing!!! i hope it is great and you don’t experience too much stress in the next few days getting ready. i’d love to hear your recap when you get back!

      • real maria

thanks! we go to mallorca often as that’s where my father-in-law retired. Strangely there’s almost no americans there, but it’s such a great family friendly destination with warm shallow beaches.

    Rant: Feeling groggier than usual.
Rant: I’m sure I have some rants and raves, but I’m so groggy I can’t remember them.

  • Farragut

EXTRA RANT?/RAVE!: For the SECOND time in the last couple months a cat came into our house.
    .
So the first time was back in April when Allison was home and was looking out back and saw a cat (gray tabby?) in the patio. She goes to open the backdoor to see if she can go pet it (as one does), and lo and behold the cat just saunters into our house. Walks around the entire house and accepts being petter. He has a collar which proclaims him to be “Mr. Squirrel” and his address–he lives across the street. Allison considered that he might have gotten loose and thought about trying to carry Mr. Squirrel back to his house. But he was a big cat and didn’t really look amenable to THAT, so she just ended up letting him back out when he went back to the door eventually. (He is apparently an indoor/outdoor cat as we found out from the neighbors, and they got him from a shelter as “Squirrel” but too many people thought that was weird so they added “Mr.” in front of it).
    .
THIS time (Sunday night), was a *different* cat–we had had our back door open but the sliding screen door closed, and this black-and-white kitty (aka BAWK aka Chicken for reasons you’ll soon see) that we’ve seen around over the past year. I was in the living room on the computer, and then I see a moving shape in the corner of my eye–a cat?!?! I yell in surprise, the cat freaks out and runs out the back and I see that the screen door is now OPEN enough for a cat to get through. Hmmm. Also, Allison had been cooking chicken so Chicken probably smelled it (calling him Chicken as a temporary name–he seems too well-fed to be a stray).
    .
I’ve also been told by Mr. Squirrel’s owner that Mr. Squirrel is apparently scared of this cat, despite the fact that he definitely outmasses him by a bunch, but I guess Chicken is an older cat on the block here so has probably marked more territory.

    • I love that this is classified as both a rant & a rave :)

    • textdoc

Hahaha! I like the stories of these guest cats.

    • SinSA

They are just being neighborly. I love it!

      • Farragut

I super regret scaring Chicken, but I wasn’t expecting him/her at all (obviously). I’d love to get to pet the neighbor cats–I see them fairly often, but they won’t get close (yet). I’ve got lots of pictures on my phone, though–I’ve got a great one of Chicken last year getting into our garden bed.

        • SinSA

          Get some cat treats…

    • womp

this is amazing!! thanks for sharing and brightening my day

    • LittleBluePenguin

Ha! Love these stories, very fun!

    • wdc

      Hilarious!
There’s a cat in my neighborhood (Hoagie) who wanders into houses when he can. He doesn’t want to be picked up, but he really wants to be petted and follow you inside. His collar has his name, his street address, and “I am an indoor/outdoor cat.”

      • textdoc

Has New Baby Kitty encountered Hoagie?

        • wdc

No, I’ve never actually let Hoagie inside, though I’ve talked to neighbors who have. And on the rare occasion NBK runs through our legs and out the door, he never gets very far. I have a feeling that he would tuck his tail and run if he met another cat, though, superior size notwithstanding. He’s huge, but not tough.

  • artemis

Rant: It took so long to get Baby Artie settled for bedtime and again when he woke up in the middle of the night. This isn’t normal for him, and I’m so tired.
Rave: Beautiful morning and lovely walk to the train.
Rant: No air conditioning on the bus this morning. So hot and no one (besides me) thought to open any windows.
Rant: This month is just so crazy busy for our family. I just have to hold on and get through it.
Rave: Lovely chat with my dad this morning.

  • hiphopanonymous

Rant: Without really meaning to, my boss pretty much shared the salaries of all of my coworkers. Granted, they’re “professionals” and I”m just the admin, but still depressed at my small, small salary. ESPECIALLY in THIS city.
Rave: I made a comment about how little I make and boss said he’s going to advocate for a larger one. Eh, it’s worth a shot!
Rave: Excited at the thought of getting out the bikes tonight! And the military bands have started playing at the Capitol again – tonight is the US Air Force band!
Random: Just waiting for Comey’s testimony………

  • TSL

Rave: My buddy at the shop where I get coffee comped my order, and then told me I look really great today. I was feeling a lot better than I have lately, and now I feel great!

  • SinSA

Rave: Found a new refrigerator last night! It’s slightly smaller than the one I have now but I had height requirements and this is the one that fit, and it’s lovely. It will be delivered in plenty of time before one of my best friends comes to visit/the party I’m having next week.

Rant: Not knowing how to fix the cosmetic stuff that needs to be completed. I’m guessing YouTube can help me with it, but I wish I had more time to hire someone to just handle it for me before next week’s festivities. But I guess it’s good that I’m going to learn how to do stuff?

    Rave: Lost 3 more pounds!

Rave: The jazz night at the brewery was really successful last week!

Rave: I slept well last night for the first time in many, many weeks.

    • LedroitTigah

hooray! I lost a few pounds by using the my fitness pal app pretty religiously these past couple of weeks. I’m attracted to the data analyzing approach! I have found that my metabolism must be more messed up than the average users because I need to eat several hundred calories less than they suggest in order to lose even a fraction of a pound (suggesting that maybe my exercise isn’t yielding the type of calorie burn that the app is suggesting it should for a woman of my age and weight – and I wear a hear rate monitoring fitbit to boot! grr)

      • ke

I was literally JUST looking at the my fitness pal app and thinking about how the PoPville community seems to like it! Do you tinker with the macros or just watch the calories? I’ve liked weight watchers online in the past, but I’m not feeling it as much.

      • skaballet

Interesting. I just started using the app and it’s been useful just to give me a sense of how much I’m eating (or drinking). It has been enlightening. I guess I need to find a scale to start weighing myself…

      • kanon

Yes, many apps and equipment overestimate calories burned. Note that the workout calories burned figure will also include the calories you would have burned if you had been sleeping instead of working out. So, for example, if your resting metabolic rate has you burning 100 calories an hour just to function/live, but you workout and it says you burned 200 calories during that workout, you really only burned an additional 100 calories.
        .
I have had success using mfp, mostly because it keeps me honest. But, I haven’t been able to get back in to the swing of tracking/eating clean(er)/working out consistently since the election, really, and my body is paying the price. Actually, I’m paying the price in terms of new, larger clothes.

  • FridayGirl

Late Rant: Entered IZ apartment lottery, but the drawing is Thursday afternoon. I leave Friday morning before open of business so I emailed the apartment on Sunday and asked what documents they require so I can collect them before I leave for my work trip Friday and drop them in the mail should I be selected. No response. Emailed again to follow up this morning, still no response. At what point should I call them? I don’t want to let it linger, and there’s no reason they can’t give me a list of documents since DHCD directs lottery applicants to the leasing office anyway, but I don’t want to come off as a pushy jerk.

    • SinSA

      Call them today.

      • FridayGirl

Thanks. I had a feeling. I’m so tired of having to keep pestering people to do their jobs (this comes on the heels of a doctor not refilling a prescription that I requested, and another doctor refilling with the wrong dose, how that happens I don’t know. But I’m out of energy!)

    • NotABot

Having been selected for the IZ lottery & declining, I believe the reason the apartment management isn’t responding is because they are waiting for official notification that you were selected. Why give you paperwork to fill out if you have not been officially selected? Plus, you have 45 days from the date you are notified of selection to give the leasing agent your required paperwork. Plenty of time even if you are going on a trip. You just need to make sure you respond to DHCD notice of selection soon after you get it.

      • FridayGirl

I still don’t understand though — like, they’d tell any normal renter generally what documents are needed before they apply. So why be so secretive about this? That is true about the 45 days though (I was a little confused about whether 45 days meant “to give all the paperwork” or to actually “enter into a lease” which takes longer, since they’d have to collect all your paperwork and run all the checks and everything. If I come back on day 35-ish, that makes me a little nervous…)

        • NotABot

If DHCD selects you from the lottery, you’ll get an email with all the information and deadlines. I had 17 days to confirm interest in renting, 45 days to give all required paperwork to the building management, and 60 days to enter into lease. All days are timed based on date of notification of selection from DHCD. I believe IZ orientation goes over this timeframe too, so it’s pretty standard.

        • Camel

Because they’ve got real work to do?

  • Pleasanter

Rant: Placed a bid for a house but was beat out by a developer who could pay cash and close in 10 days. Cash still reigns supreme. Our offer was strong and above asking with an escalation clause, and the seller took the cash offer at list price. Feeling down about this because this was an amazing find – detached fixer upper on a corner lot in a neighborhood we like a lot.

    • FridayGirl

Bah, I’m sorry to hear this :(

    • anon

Take heart – cash is king, generally, but I’m still convinced that for every seller who is happy to sell quickly to a developer, there’s another who has enjoyed living in their home and would rather sell to someone who will live in the home and fix it up, especially if it doesn’t mean taking in any less money – though they do have to be able to wait a few weeks to close.

  • lmt5n

RANT: Just witnessed a women bring her dog into the brand new McDonald’s in Rosslyn where it took a piss on the floor. The dog owner was so ignorant of the looks she got or the fact it was probably a health code violation. It was truly disgusting that she could not leave her dog outside.

  • That One Guy

Rant: Boss running out of steam after only two hours in the office. No, I can spoon feed you everything. Ugh.
