“Dear PoPville,

Does anyone have experience building a greenhouse in DC and, if so, what are the issues and concerns that might arise vis-a-vis permits and zoning? I want to build a pretty nice medium-sized greenhouse in my back yard but have already hit the 60% lot coverage limit. Would such a structure count against the limit and does anyone know of a contractor with experience building greenhouses?”

I’ve built one, the process was fairly painless. Contact DPR:

I want one rather badly. I cruise greenhouse kit sites the way other women cruise zappos. I’d love to see what you end up with!

I think the Columbia Heights Community Garden has one, if you want to ask their input.

if it’s not a “permanent” structure, it shouldn’t count toward your lot occupancy

Reach out to Niraj Ray – he runs a program called Cultivate the City (DM them on Facebook maybe) and they’ve built small greenhouses all over DC
