Rant: Chris Cornell passing, another Loss for music

Rave: I have a 1st date this evening. Keeping minimum expectations

    • NH Ave Hiker

Roger Ailes died this morning…things balanced out I guess.

      • FridayGirl

        +1

      • Anon

I believe you’re being facetious, but in case I’m wrong, that’s not a particularly healthy outlook on life.

        • FridayGirl

Oh let people have their fun, anon. He was an ass. People aren’t required to feel sympathy for him.

          • Anon

You seem to have misunderstood what I wrote above.

    • Effie

Chris Cornell had the voice of an angel, and he died on the younger side of things… sad to see him go.

  • FridayGirl

Rave: It was so nice to see everyone last night!
    .
Rant: I slept weird last night and I’m tired today. And I don’t want to do my work. I can’t wait for vacation next week.

    • FridayGirl

Additional Rant/Rave: Was notified that I’ve received a package at my apartment this morning. It’s a mystery package. I didn’t order anything. I’m thinking maybe they notified me by accident instead of a neighbor, but one can hope it’s something good?

      • BRP

A few years ago, when my now-husband and I were engaged, we got a lot of deliveries to our apartment from our Crate & Barrel registry. (Our friends and family were very generous!) Eventually, whenever I saw a C&B package at the mailboxes, I’d just grab it and take it home.

I was surprised one day to open a cast iron griddle pan, which I hadn’t put on our registry, but I just assumed that a guest went off-piste or my husband added the item without telling me.

A few weeks later, we learned that our upstairs neighbors had gotten engaged and had registered at C&B… and were wondering where the cast iron griddle pan a friend got them had ended up. Oops! Haha.

(We bought them a new one.)

        • FridayGirl

          Haha!

      • skaballet

Hate to say this, but it could also be fraud. This happened to me. Someone opened a credit card in my name and ordered something and shipped it to me. Completely do not understand the point of this fraud…

        • FridayGirl

For now I’m going to assume they just typed in the wrong apartment number when they sent the notification (that happened once before, and once with a package I actually ordered where they sent my neighbor the notification instead).

          • FridayGirl

(Also because I have credit monitoring and everything has been fine.)

Rave: Loving the book Quiet by Susan Cain that I am reading on my commute into work. I had so many moments where I said to myself “That’s me!” or “I did that.” It really made me feel better about being introverted and preferring to focus more on my books and music than on socializing growing up.
Rant: Feeling the humidity creep up on me yesterday and this morning. Ugh. Summer is here.
    Rant: Headache this morning.
Rave: Designated Survivor last night was awesome. Glad it got picked up for another season will definitely be tuning in.

    • keydet

Great read…I felt the same way. I saw her give a booktalk at 6th & I a couple years back.

  • skj84

Rant: Had a blowout with roommate over the AC last night. I should’ve stood up to her sooner.
Rave: A good friend on mine offered me her window unit. At least I’ll have one for me room. Any tips for instillation?
Rant: Went to the doctor, I have sinusitis. At least its not strep.

  • LittleBluePenguin

Rave: I know this is a silly rave, but I’m really happy there’s going to be a Wawa in DC!
Rant: had to take a sick day yesterday for some sort of stomach bug / stomach thing. Didn’t end up getting much rest because my landlady came by to look at things, see what kind of maintenance the house/property needs.
Rave: she and her brother-in-law were able to get the little pond/water feature up and running, so now we don’t have stagnant water for mosquito breeding grounds, and it’s a very nice little fountain/waterfall, which I’m sure will draw even more neat birds to the area.
Rave: Landlady also said she was so happy to have everything looking so great, and it was a relief to her to know her house was being taken such good care of – she also reassured me that I don’t have to necessarily move again at the end of the year, because they’re going to be out of the country for at least two more years! I feel like I can finally unpack my last few boxes now!
    Rant: Metro. Everything Metro.

    • Wait where’s the Wawa? I usually just end up at the one in Beltsville

      • skj84

Rumer has it Farragut Square. I really hope its Farragut Square. Wawa for lunch everyday!

  • SWChick

Rave: Awesome trip to ATL w/ the bf to meet his family and attend his cousin’s wedding. The trip seems to have made our relationship feel super serious which isnt a bad thing I guess
Rant: My sinuses could not hang in GA. I thought I was going to die from a sinus attack. It made everything difficult.
    Rave: Coffee
    Rave: The District of Columbia
    Rave: Weather
    Rave: My Job

  • SinSA

Rave: Thank you so much to everyone who stopped in at Barcelona last night!

Rave: Booked the remainder of musicians in my music series for the brewery near my house, so that stress is off.

Rave: Things are coming along nicely with the kitchen remodel. There was a partial floor last night, and they started to assemble my cabinets already!

Rave: Slept very well last night for the first time in weeks. Huge shout out to A/C.

Rave: Learned about jazz at Tabard Inn and now I want to go (yay new things for me to do!)

    Rant: Chris Cornell. Dammit.

Rant: It’s a new Trump scandal every 5 minutes!

  • Revel: had a great time lay last night at wine and bitch. We came up with a couple other popvillager meet up ideas: sad bikers and trivia at the coupe.
Rant: with 16 days left of school we find out that we have to extend the year by two days. Wtf.

    • Edit: no lay. Posting from my phone!

    • Anonamom

Why are you guys extending?? My kids are getting out almost a week earlier this year! This is literally going to be the longest summer ever.

      • State wouldn’t give us a waiver for the one snow day and the day without women to reach 180 so we will have kids on our last day, no joke.

        • houseintherear

          ugh. i’m sorry.

    • houseintherear

omg why do you have to extend??

  • Andie302

    Rant: too much death
First the hometown family friend, then I got the email about Zaan yesterday because of the GoFundMe, and now my mom called and said my half brother (who I am not very close with) has a rare blood disorder. He’s at UPenn and they wanted to move him back to southern DE for hospice care but he’s too ill to transport. His mother is the nicest woman…I am sad for her especially.

    • LedroitTigah

I’m really sorry, Andie – this all sounds horrible.

    • Emmaleigh504

      I’m sorry Andie. Hugs

    • SinSA

I am so sorry. HUGS to you.

    • I’m so sorry to hear this.

Rave: YOU GUYS, it’s so so so nice to be back in DC. I want to run around and hug everyone and shake them and be like you are so lucky you get to live here!
Rave 2: it’s so nice to commute to work by bike!
Rant: a tricked out Jeep Wrangler on R st who pulled all the way into the bike lane in hopes of going around the non-moving traffic (but couldn’t, because see: jeep wrangler). You, sir, are funny.
Rant 2: little monster is consistently waking up between 4:50 and 5:10 am for the day. I’m going to die.

    • FridayGirl

      Welcome back!!!

    • Emmaleigh504

      Welcome back!

    • Anon

Lucky to be in DC? .. sky high cost of living, no one has free time cause they’re too busy working, the worst humid weather.. yeah ok. Ive been in DC for a while and my family is rooted here, its not really the best place to be

  • JS

Did anyone see that the 14th St Dacha plans include a children’s playground? Possible sign of detente in the beer garden wars?

    • Real maria

OMGi just looked and fainted from happiness. One of my favorite places in Seattle was a brewery with a gatedkid indoor area.

    • FridayGirl

Not going to lie, this is a cool idea. But kids are just as loud as drunk adults, so if noise is the issue idk how that will go over.

  • houseintherear

Rant: I spent way too much time yesterday on twitter trying to understand the Seth Rich conspiracy theories. Why are people so incredibly gullible and stupid?! It’s baffling. And many of those people are still talking about pizzagate, Killary’s emails, Bengazi… it’s a s*hit show.

Rave: I am now back in my happy comfort zone of pretending these weird things don’t exist. : )

    • Emmaleigh504

Those conspiracy theories are just nuts. I can’t understand why ppl believe them. Are they just that dumb?

      • houseintherear

Desperate for something to go their way, I guess?

        • Anon

Yes. There are a lot of people around the country grasping for whatever straws possible. It’s a sign of how far we’ve devolved as a country.

  • smrtcar

Rant: Can’t understand the why the violent assaults on peaceful American protesters by Turkish security agents isn’t getting any traction in the media. First Amendment violation by a foreign agency on American soil. I find it hard to imagine a more fundamental violation of the Constitution.

Rave: Going to Hawaii on Saturday.

    • LittleBluePenguin

I saw video of the Turkey protesters getting attacked on the BBC news app, and it was pretty shocking – this diplomatic immunity sh*t is nonsense, get these thugs out of here! As if we didn’t already have to worry about our nation being run, by all appearances, by a Russian puppet, now we’re supposed to give these Erdogan proxies a pass?! This is NUTS!

      • FridayGirl

        Seriously. Diplomatic immunity my ass.

    • LedroitTigah

I think Senator McCain has demanded Turkey apologize. CNN was talking about it yesterday morning, so I think its getting some traction (but, these days, Russia is sucking up all the oxygen in Washington — deservedly so, Id say)

    • Anonamom

I just saw the footage of this yesterday, and I was completely floored. The worst thing is that I’m sure they will try and pull diplomatic immunity for some or all of the thugs involved.

    • Accountering

I made with Andie last night that DC should get arrest warrants for each and every person they can identify from the assaults, and then make the Turkish Embassy file for diplomatic immunity etc. Then insist that those people are deported. That attack was outrageous, and cannot stand.

      • FridayGirl

I agree. (And theoretically even if they were granted diplomatic immunity, it doesn’t mean we’d ever give them a visa in the future…)

    • stacksp

Maybe because no one died. Not excusing it but had 8 people been shot or killed, the response and coverage would be greater. So much daily violence that a fisticuffs might be considered tame at this point

  • BRKLND

Rant: Life is pretty hard right now. We have to put my 15 year old dog to sleep today – feeling pretty terrible. He has been a major part of my entire adult life…this is going to be really hard. The state of our country makes me so sad and embarrassed. Been job searching for what seems like forever (a year and some change)…and feeling totally unmotivated to do anything at my current job. It just seems like everything is not going well it is really hard not to be overwhelmed by it all.
Rave: Leaving for vacation on Wednesday…I can not wait to get out of here for a while. I have a very supportive and loving partner that will help me through this. Will try very hard not to be a wet blanket on our trip.

    • Accountering

So sorry to hear this – losing a family member is always so hard. Keep your head up and take care of yourself.

    • LittleBluePenguin

Oh, I’m so sorry for your loss. I’m sure you’re feeling gutted, and it sounds like you’re really struggling with some tough stuff, but I hope your vacation is relaxing and restorative. Hugs!

    • Emmaleigh504

I’m so sorry for your loss. Hugs

    • Andie302

Sending hugs and so sorry to hear this

    • That One Guy

Sorry for your loss. I hope he took a great big squeeze of life in his 15 years here.

    • I am so sorry for your loss and current hard times. Hugs!
You should be as sad as you feel and not worry about it. Your partner sounds great and I am sure they understand. Enjoy your vacation!

Rave: Special prosecutor named in Russia scandal!
Rant: Jeff Sessions’ memo to prosecutors, telling them to seek ‘most serious charges’ and stricter sentences. Right, because what we need is more people in prison.
Rant: Trump’s first trip out of the country. Who knows what he’ll agree to do if someone flatters him?
Rave: Reading “All the Light We Cannot See” and it’s fantastic!
Rant: The more we talk about having a baby in the semi-near future, the more it hits me that I’ve been on serious prescription meds since I was 9 which could lead to developmental issues with future kid…which is terrifying. Working with the dr. to get off some of said meds before then, but still….

  • Anonamom

Rant: Littlest Anonachild lost his brand new glasses yesterday. I have a feeling this will be a long, expensive battle.
    Rave: HSA funds.
Rave: SO’s oldest has finally (after a LOT of tough love) gotten his grades out of the gutter and is actually thinking about college (all be it community college – but seriously, there is nothing wrong with that). Parenting/step-parenting is really hard, especially when you have to deal with conflicting parenting styles, so this is a huge win, especially for my SO. I am super proud of the oldest.

    • kanon

I started at community college and ended up eventually getting a phd, so yeah, absolutely nothing wrong with community college.

    • My little brother failed out of his first attempt at undergrad in one semester. Seven years later he got his shit together and went to the only community college in the metro area that would accept him, and two years later got into a top engineering program. He just graduated with a degree in chemical engineering and I couldn’t be more proud.

Query (time-sensitive): My car is overdue for an oil change — like maybe 6 months overdue. Is it a bad idea to embark on a road trip (270 miles) today without getting an oil change first?
    .
I went to the mechanic this morning at 8:45. The sign said they opened at 9, so I figured I’d wait. At 9:05 they still hadn’t opened. I asked the guy in the mini-mart if the mechanic was going to be open today, and he said yes, at 9:30. I was so angry at having already wasted 20 minutes that I went home in a fit of pique. If they don’t open until 9:30, then change the damn sign to reflect that!!
    .
Anyway… should I get an oil change today before heading out?

    • 1301

Most oil change stickers also list a mileage marker at which you should change the oil. If the trip won’t put you over, you might be okay? But breaking down on the side of the road would also suck monkey balls.

      • Jay

I would only change my car’s oil once a year because I didn’t drive it that much (about 4000 miles a year, the vast majority of which were highway miles)… I never had any engine-related problems in the 13 years I owned it… (I also typically got a synthetic blend, which I was told was better for my driving/maintenance schedule)…

    • Accountering

Stop at Jiffy Lube on the way out of town? They are a bunch by the beltway on the major routes heading out of town. Bit more expensive but they will have you in and out in like 20 minutes.

    • Anonymous

As long as there’s *enough* oil in the car I doubt getting it changed right now will be very crucial.

      • Anonymous

But if you’re feeling uncomfortable at deviating so far from recommended practice, I’d agree with Accountering, just find a Jiffy Lube to go to. They probably have free WiFi and coffee while you wait so you can keep us posted, haha.

    • Andie302

Yes! See if there is a jiffy lube somewhere convenient on the early end of your route. (The one up by Ikea was very quick for us a couple months ago). Definitely get the oil change. A friend I went to lunch with yesterday waited too long and is now facing an engine replacement!!!!

    • Anonamom

How many miles have you gone? This is more important, according to my mechanic dad. the whole “3 months” thing is very out dated, and with modern engines, no longer applicable unless you are Jiffy Lube trying to drum up business. Check your oil level, and as long as that is good, you should be fine.
      .
For comparison, I am now due an oil change. It’s been about 9 months and about 9,000 miles.

    • Anon Spock

Look at your oil. Do you have enough? If so, then being a little dirty should be fine. The mileage is the thing you should go by. Driving is what uses it and makes it dirty.

    • Formerly ParkViewRes

I guess it depends on how old your car is and how many miles you’ve driven in the last 6 months. We just bought a new car and it only needs an oil change once a year. However, when my sister was in high school she didn’t get the oil changed on our old ass car and the engine seized. Wooooo, at least that car lasted for all 3 of us…until it got to her!

    • textdoc

I am embarrassed to say that the last time I actually checked my oil (like, by looking at the dipstick), I was in college. -hangs head in shame-
      .
I think I will either try to do that before I leave (possibly with the aid of a YouTube video), and/or stop by a Jiffy Lube somewhere in Northern Virginia.
      .
My car’s manual says it needs an oil change every 5 months or 5,000 miles, whichever comes first. I last got the oil changed about 12 months ago (hangs head in shame), but I haven’t driven anywhere close to 5,000 miles. Maybe 1,500 or so? (The sticker with the mileage/date reminder fell off my windshield, so I’m not sure exactly.)

      • msus

1500 miles since the last one? You’re definitely ok then (at least I regards to the oil).

      • Anon Spock

So those guidelines never make any sense to me. Should it be changed if you’ve driven no miles in 5 months? I would not let that x months guide you when you seem to drive so infrequently. If you’d feel better, change it annually for piece of mind, but I don’t think you need to rush before this trip.
Dipstick usually has a ring on it. Get an old rag. Pull it out, wipe off the oil, then reinsert as far as it’ll go. Pull dipstick out to see if oil is at the full line…There will be a bump or other indicator toward the bottom.

        • textdoc

          Thanks, Anon Spock!

Aweseome news about Wawa! Sounds like it’ll be on the same block as my office. Though somehow I doubt that my mini Italian will cost $2.89, like it did in my early professional years in Philly.
What. The actual. FCUK. is going on with the drivers in this city? Had to run a quick errand around 9-9:30, and witnessed more boneheaded, dangerous, selfish, dickish driving behavior than I imagined was possible. One woman (MD plates) did a U turn, midblock, on 16th street. But of course the oncoming lane wouldn’t let her in, so she just sat there, blocking three lanes. Another woman (NC plates) put on her left blinker, and just as I was going around her on the right, changed her mind and swerved right. It was a VERY near thing. One guy (MD plates) decided it was his personal mission to slow everything down. He never got above 5 mph, and kept making hand signals to “calm down” at everyone who was just trying to get as many cars though a green light as possible. And of course the usual people racing ahead of a line waiting to merge and then cutting in, and the usual people making a left while blocking both lanes, and the usual people stopping suddenly in a moving lane to let someone get out.
We need traffic enforcement. I swear it’s a miracle that we don’t kill a dozen people every day in that mess.

Rave: Although it sucks that my agency is under an elimination threat, the support that has materialized – and often in some surprising groups/individuals – all over the country is both heartening and moving.

  • skj84

Late Rant: I just realized my ticket to ATL next week is economy. Which means I can only bring a personal bag on the plane. I was planning on bringing a carryon and personal. Normally I’d suck it up and pay to check the bag, but i purchased my ticket through Skiplagged which prohibits checking baggage (you get a cheaper fare for only booking one leg of a multi stop flight). What do I do? Should I try to upgrade with the airline? Mail my luggage? Has anyone run into this problem before?

    • ke

Skiplagged! Interesting, I had never heard of that site. Does that mean any bag you bring will have to fit under the seat in front of you? Can you confine yourself to one smallish duffel instead of a roller? If you check the measurements, it may fit under the seat (we try to travel light with small duffel-style bags that can be shoved under the seat if needed.) Otherwise, I suppose shipping your bag is the best option.

    • It’s just me

How long is the trip? I’m able to pack for 3-4 days (longer if it is really casual and I don’t care how I look) in a backpack that just barely fits under the seat. It may be worth it to see if you can do that and just take a personal bag.

  • Anon

Rave: Feeling overwhelmed by the state of the country and serious malaise in my fed job, I decided that I need something to look forward to so I booked a vacation for my family over the winter holidays. We are usually pretty stingy when it comes to travel, but screw it, beautiful beaches here we come! I can now look longingly at the photos of our rental place and start counting down the days until I am lounging in a hammock with a drink in my hand.
