Thanks to a reader for passing on from Mint:

“MINT announces our first dedicated fitness studio! To be located at the newly developed Manhattan Laundry building on Florida Ave at 14th Street, the new studio will feature two studio rooms inside and offer showers, lockers and minty amenities. Programming offerings include Power Playground, Cycle, MINTFuze, TRX, Core, MINTensity and more. This first MINT Studio will open in late summer 2017. The studio will offer both class packages and ‘all-access’ memberships that will include unlimited use of the studio and both clubs. Current MINT members will be offered special rates, stay tuned for more info soon.”

I mean, any gym is better than no gym. But in a city to obsessed/dedicated to fitness I find the complete lack of a gym with a bunch of power racks (more than 3)/free weights frustrating. Lack of demand maybe?

As someone who still drives to Mint DuPont from Petworth because lack of quality gyms in the neighborhood, I wish this was a full expansion — not just classes. It’d do very well. Think they’d also do well in Petworth.

They make the most money on overpriced/hyped classes. For some reason people are willing to pay more for one 2 hour class than an entire month gym membership.

Makes no sense to me but I guess many people lack the motivation to work out on their own and instead need someone telling them what to do.

Seriously, why does U Street/Logan have at least four gyms and we can’t get a few treadmills for rent in Petworth? Dear D.C. gym owners: you’re missing a prime market–people in Petworth like to work out too.

Same with the Shaw/Howard area, I think. Theres some cycling studios and that new high priced personal fitness place on Rhode Island (and like 7th? 8th?), but no real gyms that I can find…

I’m confused. They are building a new gym 10 feet from the YMCA and around the corner from a crossfit place. Is there really a sufficient demand for this?

And this is a short walk from their 18th/Florida location…
There’s a lot of population density in the area, but this is kind of crazy.

What’s the difference between a “club” and a “studio”? Is it that the studio will offer only classes and not weights/cardio for people to use on their own?
