You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in DC.

Rave: Running. I am almost out of my plateau, I can feel it.
Rant: This humidity. And it’s not even that bad yet
    Rant: My Mets suck
Rave: I get to see them tonight anyway.
    Rave: It’s Friday!

  • georgetowner

Rant: Our recycling hasn’t been picked up in months and just gets tossed in the trash truck along with the trash. Does anyone else have the same problem? I’m wondering if it’s just our admittedly difficult block or if this is a more pervasive problem. Calls to DPW haven’t accomplished anything.

Rave: Committed to spending the day crossing off a million small, nagging tasks off my to do list.

  • mtpresident

Rave: Got up at 5:30 (eek!) and met a new running buddy for a run this morning! I think we’re going to make it a weekly habit! Yay!
Rave: Everyone was up on time and we had a fun breakfast in the dining room listening to kids’ music. Kids were agreeable on getting through the weekday morning routine, and it didn’t seem to make sense to say no when I could say yes. We would have even left closer to on time if I hadn’t almost forgotten to apply sunscreen to the kids!
Rave: came into work and found a box of crayons on my desk with an apology from a friend for a stupid argument about color palettes. It was a dumb argument to allow to happen, but that apology and crayons were sweet.
Rave: Checked out Purple Patch at a school fundraiser last night. Delicious! And I really enjoyed my cocktail. We will have to return at a less chaotic time. And I even managed to mange both kids on my own in that chaotic environment so we could eat there. Very grateful to another parent who shared french fries to the very hangry mtpbaby–he turned back into his delightful self after scarfing several while waiting for his meal.
Rave: The FQotD–fascinating to learn more about what people do!

  • Emmaleigh504

Rant: Donna has taken to licking my nose while I sleep. It’s a rude way to be waked up!
Rave: Love the Friday Question. I’m genuinely curious what people’s jobs are.

    • wdc

I had a cat who nibbled my ears. Sometimes while kneading my head. It was cute, but not a nice way to be woken up in the wee hours.

  • IDontGetIt

Rave: Very happy with Cleanly–24 hour turnaround and all my clothes were returned neatly folded and packaged with like items. $23 after applying $10 coupon plus tip for 18 pounds of laundry.
Rant: Chaos has returned to my household.
Rant: Still getting shade at work that I am one of the two in our group flying to RDU instead of taking the “optional” chartered bus.

  • ajr

Rave: Knocked out a bunch of errands yesterday evening so that I won’t have to worry about them this weekend. All that’s left is getting my car inspected, a car wash (ugh pollen), and likely a good ol’ clean-out of our storage unit. We’ve been meaning to do that for too long…
Rave: Traffic was crazy easy this morning and my commute took 15 mins.
Rant: I realized while belting Chris Stapleton’s ‘Parachute’ that today is (was?) my stepdad’s birthday. Much like everything else associated with him, I don’t know how I feel about it. I hate that I miss him. He doesn’t deserve it.
Rave: But therapy has taught me that regardless of his actions I deserve to feel my emotions as they come. He may not be worth it but I am. I’m going to allow myself a cheat lunch with a coworker and relax this evening with my boyfriend while binge watching some Breaking Bad, which I have gotten him into. We have very different tastes when it comes to TV or movies so it’s nice to have an “us” show.

    • artemis

“He may not be worth it but I am.”

Amen to that statement. I imagine that when my stepdad is no longer with us I will have very complicated feelings as well (for very valid reasons). Even if our parental figures failed us in major ways, we can’t help but we shaped by them. So the complicated feelings make sense. I’m glad that you are allowing yourself to feel what you feel without judgment. Feelings just are.

    • AJSE

I love that song but can only listen to it when I’m in a place to feel strong emotions. Nice job on the errands!

Rave/Rant: Weeks of work travel – four continents, four countries, 7 cities/towns
Rave: Managed to squeeze in a few days in the Serengeti/Ngorongoro and it was magnificent, truly awe inspiring.
Rant: Buried under piles of e-mails.
Rave: Rolex Kentucky 3-day Event is this weekend! And it’s livestreaming (+Badminton is next week). Best weekends of the year – horses on TV.
Rave/Rant: May is shaping up to be even crazier with travel every two to three days or so… hoping I can keep my head on straight, keep my husband and I coordinated and happy, and maintain some semblance of exercise/healthy + relationships with friends.

Rave – CUA’s fireworks will begin around 9:45 pm tonight, Friday April 28th.
Rant – People who constantly say “perfect.”

    • Anonynon

What are the fireworks for? Is it open to the public?

      • Anonymous

End of the school year. You can see them from all over Brookland look toward the Basilica. Catholic’s campus is usually open.

    • anon

Isn’t the constant use of “perfect” a Brit, or maybe Irish, thing? I’m hearing it with an accent in my head….or maybe I’m confusing it with “brilliant.”

      • Anonymous

Maybe that’s where it originated but I hear all the time in my office, customer service people etc..

Waiter – How would you like your steak
        Me- Medium rare
        Waiter – perfect

This quote sums up how I feel

The English language is a beautiful thing to think about — imagine all the wonderful words we have, their stories, their ability to create change, motivate people, and convey stories.

There are a few words that make me cringe, like “moist,” “interesting,” ”unique,” “juror,” “blog,” and “synergy.” But the word I cannot stand most? “Perfect.”

Rave/Gratitude: Humane Rescue Alliance. I know I had some stern words about them during the whole Momma the Dog fiasco, but they really do great work and have to work within pretty ridiculous limits when it comes to humane animal laws. Thankful for their staff, volunteers, and all the people who chip in a few bucks to make DC animals’ lives a little better (including, at one time, my Liam).

  • Revel: took today off for a doctors appointment.
Rant: I really needed it since the disaster that has been this week
Revel: going to Florida tomorrow morning!
Rant: can only stay a couple days

    • LittleBluePenguin

      have fun in FL!

      • dcgator

Yes, enjoy FTL! I’m sure it’s madd hot down there already, but please make sure you get to the beach—it’s what I miss most, along with the ocean breeze.

  • SinSA

    Rave: Friday!
Rave: A week from today my music series that I booked begins and I am hopeful that it is successful!
    Rave: The weather!
Rave: I’m down 10 pounds in a month!
Rave: Looking forward to the weekend!

    • CapitolHillHipHopHooray

Woo on the weightloss! Get it!

  • artemis

Rave: Baby Artie slept through the night for the second time in a row. I’m hoping this is the start of a new trend. And he was in such a good mood this morning.
Rant: I am so ready for this work week to be over.
Rave: Dear friend and her boys are coming over for an impromptu dinner tonight.
Rave: I get to watch the cutest baby on the planet on Saturday night (don’t tell Baby Artie I said that).

  • LittleBluePenguin

Rave: The week is almost over! and even better, since I’ve stayed late 3 days this week, my boss told me I should go home early this afternoon – BEDTIME! Which will be good because I have to be up bright and early for a walk on Sat. morning!
Rant: Sooo humid! I blew my hair dry, tried putting some smoothing oil – it looked great inside my house but once I got outside – wooo boy! frizzy, crazy hair!
Rant: Not in love with the forecast for this weekend, esp. the heat! I refuse to run my AC in April!

  • hiphopanonymous

Rant/Rave: So little to do on this Friday that I’ve spent the entire morning thus far online.
Rant: Was using our electric massage thingy last night and somehow made a knot in my back WORSE! Ouch.
Rave: It’s FRIDAY! And we’re going away this weekend!
Rave/Rant: Reading what everyone does for a living. You people do some pretty awesome things…I do not. My job is kinda’ crap and it’s not what I want to do in the long run. Sadly, even though I’m a month from turning 35, I STILL have yet to figure out exactly what I want to be when I grow up.
Rave: Somehow I got roped into helping with an event with 40 high schoolers this afternoon…which just happens to be outside. Oh, darn, best to put on my sandals and head out in the sun!

  • Anonamom

Rant: Not wearing make-up today and just got a “why is your face so red” from a co-worker. Well, thanks asshole, first it was red because I have rosacea, but now it’s red from embarrassment.
Rant: I don’t care how many time my SO or my friends tell me “it’s not that bad!” crap like this always reminds me that, yes, it is that bad.
    Rave: Friday!

    • mtpresident

Ugh, I’m sorry. People just don’t think sometimes. I have tendencies towards being that person, but I try not to be. I hope you were able to inform the person & that s/he thinks twice before asking a question like that in the future. Bah. Not cool.

  • Hookdntx

Rave: Office pot luck today, means less actual work things
rant: one coworker has heated up their stuff and it smells… bad (stale pot roast) and has permeated the whole office

Rant – had an extremely weird doctor’s appointment. Saw an orthoped about some joint pain. To make the point that my weight may be a biological issue to get me to go see a gastric bypass doctor, he starts going on about how the army wouldn’t let flat footed men serve in the army, but then figured out that flat footed distance runners were winning races, so realized that they were wrong. Then he says that that was the same as Hitler’s thinking. WHAT? I REALLY wish I had had the instant thought to say (1) Wow, I didn’t ever hear about that time in history where the US Army put flat footed would-be soldiers in ovens, (2) WTF does this have to do with my knee or my weight, and (3) good bye, this appointment is over. Not only was it just REALLY over the top a despicable thing to say, it was not at all pertinent to what I was seeing him for.

    • textdoc

That’s really weird. Was he trying to make the point that your weight could be a cause of your joint pain, but he was using an oddly roundabout and eugenicist-sounding anecdote to do so??

      • anon

I think he was trying to make the point that my weight could be caused by genetics, that my weight wasn’t causing the current joint pain, but that it will cause joint pain at some point. But I still don’t understand how his story actually made that point. Just weird.

  • No more smoke

Anything I can do about neighbors smoking on their patio? Sometimes there are a few folks out there drinking and smoking for hours….

    • textdoc

Are you in a rowhouse? Townhouse with HOA? Apartment building? Condo building?

      • No more smoke

        Row house–we both own.

        • textdoc

In that situation, I don’t think you have any recourse as far as D.C. laws/regulations.
If they’re making a lot of noise you could call the police with the noise complaint, but my understanding is that the police usually won’t come for noise complaints before 10 p.m.
If the smoke is wafting over to your yard, perhaps you could set up a box fan on your back porch and have it blow in the opposite direction? Not really sure what else you can do.
(You could politely ask your neighbors if they wouldn’t mind not smoking outdoors, but then they might smoke indoors… and if the seals between your houses aren’t tight, then you could end up with their smoke INSIDE your house, which would be a lot worse.)

Rant: It’s apparently stupid people day. Bad commute, including almost hitting a pedestrian who just walked out against the light in front of several cyclists, after earlier having to ride in the regular lanes, with an impatient driver beeping at me even though I was going the same speed as the car in front of me, because Metro vehicles parked smack in the middle of the cycle track. That pedestrian’s lucky I have disc brakes, as I was trying to make the light (and failed, after said brake-slamming). And then I just had a tourist walk straight into me while I was waiting to cross the street (toes on the edge of the marble curb, so not “in the middle of the sidewalk” as he depicted the location of my “loafing around in everyone’s way”). The only explanation is that I’m invisible and just haven’t realized my superpower yet.
At least it’s quiet at work? Kind of a half-rave.

RANT: The irony is, downtown is littered with paper leaflets from the clenched-fist Save the Earth crowd. Removed about 100 tucked in a chain link fence before the wind could scatter them.
