Mindy sends the great shot above:

“A hawk near Upper Senate Park. A squirrel was taunting it. Unsuccessful in catching squirrel 2x.”

and more scavenger than bird of prey but Christina sends the shot below of a couple of Turkey Vultures chilling at 14th and S St, NW:

If you spot a hawk or any other bird of prey around town, lunching or otherwise, please send a photo and an email where you spotted it to [email protected] and I’ll add it to the queue. Hawks around Town is made possible by a generous grant from the Ben and Sylvia Gardner foundation.

Those are black vultures, actually. Nice pic.

Beat me to it, was just about to say the same thing.

  • Kiel

This shot of the vultures seems staged to me!

    • Dinkins

Totally, shadows are a dead giveaway

Hawks about twon – a great series!

Btw, the first photo is of an immature Red-tailed Hawk. Not only are the field marks correct (espeially the “belly-band”), but the observation that it was hunting squirrels. The other common hawks seen in the city (accipiters: Cooper’s and Sharp-shinned Hawks) target birds.
