“The Eighth Annual Hopslam vs Nugget Nectar Battle Royale at The Black Squirrel

Bell’s Hopslam and Troegs Nugget Nectar will vie for hop supremacy for the eighth year on the main floor of the Black Squirrel on Friday, January 27th, starting at 5 p.m.

Both highly coveted seasonal beers pack a wallop, with Hopslam reporting in at 10 percent ABV and Nugget Nectar at 7.5 percent ABV.

You be the judge on which highly hopped ale reigns supreme. It’s your call. It’s all your pleasure.

As the knock-out punch, our chef will prepare IPA-infused Mac and Cheese, Citra-Hop-Seasoned Boardwalk Fries, and a Hop Daddy Burger topped with hop-infused cheddar sauce and hoppy mayonnaise. Hop-diggity-dog!

Do people still line up for the chance to buy a single six pack of Hopslam? I haven’t paid much attention lately, but that used to be a big deal.

Good question — it’s so expensive and there are so many other amazing DIPA’s out these days that I would think not, but what do I know.

Less of a big deal. Still sells fast, but my store sells less and less every year. Didn’t even sell out 2 days after it’s release this year. Cheaper, better, easier to find options abound.

Agreed – Hopslam is more hype than anything at this point.

This. And it’s also not the beer it was 5-6 years ago. I know the formulation changes slightly every year, but 3-4 years ago it seemed like a big change in the recipe, it’s a lot less balanced than it used to be. I stopped caring when six packs passed the $20 mark. There are dozens of comparable DIPAs at almost half the price these days.

I agree with others, there are so many big, hoppy double/imperial IPAs out there today that Hopslam really doesn’t stand out like it once did. And if one is in short supply, there’s probably another equally good example of the style just down the shelf.

  • Rob

This is apples and oranges. Nugget Nectar is a hoppy amber and Hopslam is legit double IPA. Also the availability for these two don’t match, there are palettes of Nectar at HT when it comes out and Hopslam…you’re lucky to get a full shelf. …this won’t hold me back from going haha, and the food sounds good.

This should be something like Hopslam vs. Hoptimum.

An event who do not want to taste anything for the remainder of the weekend….
