“Dear PoPville,

Have you heard anything about the fireworks that were set off last night at 6:30pm in Kalorama Park?”

I got tons of reports and confirmations @PoPville on twitter last night but nobody was able to provide more info. Think somebody came into a nice personal stash or was this an organized/semi organized thing?

  • Greg

They were off Mintwood back alley it looked like — heard them/saw flashes of light. Not sure why last night though.

  • Kalorama Neighbor

I heard them as well..not sure what the heck was happening…initially thought it was gunshots. Why fireworks? Why last night?

  • Ward One Resident

They were definitely in Kalorama park and while it may have been an organized/semi organized thing as you note, it certainly wasn’t legal. You’re not allowed to set of fireworks in city parks and those that were set off (saw photos) are not the type that are legal in D.C.

Looked like they were also going off in the alley behind Belmont. I could see them from my window.

Saw them out my window — couldn’t figure it out. Epiphany fireworks? I thought they were in Arlington but the post seems to say they were closer in than that. Pretty! Unexpected! Supernal!

  • James

Definitely from Kalorama Park, and they were actually pretty impressive. At first I also thought it was a gunshot.

Asian New Year’s Day is coming up.

*Lunar New Year is the 28th. Little early for that…

        Agreed.
        .
And “Asian New Year” is a misnomer; the upcoming lunar new year is Chinese/Vietnamese/Korean New Year (and Tibetan/Mongolian New Year). Since the 1870s, Japan has observed the new year according to the Western calendar.
        .
Apparently most Southeast Asian and South Asian cultures observe the lunar new year in March or April: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_New_Year

Sunday was Epiphany (Feast of Three Kings in Mexico)… Also, Saturday was Russian Christmas. Who knows? I thought it might be a Mexican send-up. Viva!

  • Willard_Street

Wow – I heard them all the way down on the south side of Dupont Circle!

  • SaraEP

I saw/heard them from my building in Mt. P. thought it was further away at the gtown harbor or something

Didn’t sound at all like gun shots, but poked my head out to confirm they were indeed fireworks and check em out. If amateur, they were the most impressive nonprofessional fireworks I’ve ever seen, including the impressive displays in parts of this city on the 4th of July. Must have cost a mint.

  • Michael

Saw them from atop Atlantic plumbing

It was fire works. I live on Biltmore and heard what I thought were gunshots. The next morning I was walking my dog and found some pieces of an huge firework.

Heard them on Sunday, and again just now! (Wednesday, 845). What is it? I am hoping this second installment was not in fact gunshots.
