You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in DC.

We’ll be back to our normal posting schedule on Monday.

Rave: No traffic this morning, almost empty bus, almost no emails.
Rant: Should be done with almost all of my work by noon. Hoping our director lets us go home early or else I’m going to be falling asleep at my desk.
Rant: I have a date this weekend. I don’t really want to go.

    • Anon Spock

You should cancel that date if you’re just not feeling it.

  • Anonamom

Our old lady lab passed over the rainbow bridge this morning at home with her boy and her dad and one very sad step-mom, and with her dachshund by her side. She had one last thanksgiving with her people and passed away before we could take her to the vet. She loved her kids and was a great pup. RIP Roxie, we love you.

    • FridayGirl

Aw, I am so sorry for your family’s loss, Anonamom. I’m glad she was able to spend one last holiday with you.

    • That One Guy

I hope she had one last amazing Thanksgiving dinner to see her off. Sorry to hear of your loss.

    • textdoc

So sorry to hear of Roxie’s passing, Anonamom.

    • Emmaleigh504

      I’m sorry for your loss.

    • MPinDC

So sorry for your family’s loss Anonamom

    • So sorry to hear this. RIP Roxie.

    • I Dont Get It

RIP Roxie! You were clearly very much loved!

    • anonymouse_dianne

I am so sorry for your loss. In my family, Thanksgiving marks the beginning of a sad season, start

    • anonymouse_dianne

I am so sorry. In my family, Thanksgiving is the start of a sad season, beginning with the loss of a family friend, a perpetual Thanksgiving orphan, who died the evening before Tday in 1974. Reminder to anyone thinking of a Xmas puppy or kitten – all adoptions at HRA are free this weekend! RIP roxie.

    • artemis

      So sorry for your loss.

  • That One Guy

    Rave: That’s a lovely photo.
? I’m in an acupuncturist’s office right now and a middle eastern women covered from head to toe, including her face, walked in. How does this work if the person administering the needles is a guy? O.o I guess I’ll file this under the odd things that happen when you raise a parent.

    • textdoc

My guess is that she would’ve requested a female acupuncturist.

    • none today

Not to be that person, but while she may be a highly observant Muslim, you do not know she is Middle Eastern. Islam is a global religion (and Afghanistan, where the burqa is more common, is not in the Middle East).

      • textdoc

C’mon… you are being that person.
        .
I was assuming from That One Guy’s description that the woman in question was wearing a niqab (veil with a slit for the eyes), not a burqa.

        • none today

Fair point. What would be more accurate is to say that the above comment from That One Guy struck me as gawking at someone else’s religious dress and, accompanied by the question really distasteful.

          • NW_DC

Eh, I’m fine with his comment. I’m sure everyone in the room was thinking it!

  • textdoc

    Beautiful photo.

  • EPinDC

Rave: Yummy non-turkey Thanksgiving dinner prepared by my boyfriend.
Rant: Thanksgiving weighed down a bit by stress about upcoming work deadlines . Need to learn how to compartmentalize a bit more.
Rant: Still wake up with knots in my stomach that we will soon have what appears to be a mad man in the WH.
    Rave/revelation: Trying to start meditating.

    • LP

I hear you on your rant! I have been waking up with really bad dreams every night about the same mad man that will be in the WH.

    • NW_DC

I downloaded a meditating app but it doesn’t help that much. The local meditation center has classes that are an entire hour long – way too much for a beginner.

Rave: Thanksgiving went well. My parents, brothers, sister in law, best friend and her boyfriend came over. I had a happy accident with the turkey, my recipe called to line the bottom of the pan with cidar, wine and aromatics, then rest the turkey on a rack. I didn’t have one so I tried to rig one with foil, but the Turkey was still partly submerged. It was delicious, the meat was falling off the bones. I’m glad I got to have my family together, but a bit sad a the ripple effect the drama had. It was fun bonding with my Mom in the kitchen. At one point we had all of us “kids” and her wrapping things up, it wasn’t like the baton was being passed on to my generation.
Rave: I’m off today!!! Slept like a rock. I may do some shopping and I have plans to hit up the Christmas Bar later.

    • FridayGirl

Christmas bar! Yeah! Have fun and let us know how the expanded version is! I didn’t make it last year but I’m hoping to this year (assuming the lines are shorter).

  • pcat

Rant: My lover of 2 years retired and moved to Florida on Tuesday – without so much as a goodbye phone call or even an email. I knew it was coming but expected better of him. I will get over his loss but probably not his totally insensitive behavior.

    • Emmaleigh504

      That sucks.

      • textdoc

        Agreed.
        .
Pcat, I hope his departure frees you to find someone who does better by you.

        • anonymouse_dianne

My thoughts exactly. I broke up with my bfriend when he went into hiding after my cancer diagnoses. I figured I needed to make room for someone who would love me better.

          • NW_DC

            +1. Hope you’re doing well.

    • NW_DC

Argh! That’s not cool of him. It takes time to get over a person – regardless of how emotionally close you are – and I’m on the ‘two years’ time as well now. Don’t expect mine to move anytime soon (but who knows). Def hope you find a person who treats you with more respect. So many men lack the emotional maturity to end things in person – or even via texting back!

  • Emmaleigh504

Rant: why don’t I take the Friday after Thanksgiving off? It always sucks.
Rave: had a great Thanksgiving and have lots of leftovers!

  • Revel: it’s so nice to have a day or two off here and there and not have any big obligations
Rant: I’m still allotting 2 hours to grade today because trying to grade a ton of papers on a Sunday really sucks
Revel: at least 2nd grade papers are short and easy to grade
Revel: The chocolate cherry rugelach I made yesterday were a big hit at dinner last night. Will make again!

    • Emmaleigh504

      Chocolate cherry rugelach sounds divine!

      • It was so good. I took Ina Garten’s rugelach recipe for the dough and just used cherry jam mixed with melted chocolate chips for the filling. Rolling it into crescents was tough and they pretty much all ended up misshapen and ugly but the taste!

        • Emmaleigh504

Taste is what really matters, who cares if they are ugly.

          • textdoc

            Agreed!

        • NW_DC

Oh, wow! I need friends with those skills. LOVE rugelach!

  • textdoc

On a happier (?) note… Anonamom, did Steamroller Relative behave herself and not try to sneak Badly Behaved Orphan into your Thanksgiving?

  • I Dont Get It

Rave: Amazon had a great deal on the 6-in-1 Instant Pot yesterday so I bought one!
Rant: Today Amazon has a great deal on the 7-in-1 Instant Pot! Boo!

    • Blithe

Thanks for the heads up! I’ve been waffling about investing in some sort of electric cooker — and this was just the push that I need. I’ve also been considering getting a hand mixer. I don’t bake much, but It would be a nice thing to have when I do.

      • Idontgetit

There’s a VERY active Instant Pot group on Facebook that you might want to consider joining. It was recommended to me by another PoPvillager.

        • Blithe

I don’t think I’m there yet, but uf that changes, I’ll be sure to let you know! 🙂

  • textdoc

Rave: Some of my irises are blooming!
    Rant: Gloomy day.

    • textdoc

Additional rave: Chicken noodle soup. Cures what ails you!

    • Idontgetit

I see a lot of roses blooming. I think they are Knock Out roses.

  • Anon

Anyone know why North Capitol and New York Ave were closed Wednesday? It was a complete mess. I read somewhere it was due to a motorcade, but I’ve never seen that type of shut down, especially one lasting for so long, for just a motorcade.

    • There were two things – one was Obama’s motorocade. 2nd was a truck fire on Rhode Island Ave just off North Cap.

      • Anon

        Ahh that explains it. Thanks!

  • It’s just me

Rave: good thanksgiving day all alone. SO recharging for this extreme introvert!

Question – I’m headed out of town inauguration weekend. There is one direct flight a day at around 8:30AM. It is better for me to be at work on Thursday (but I could take Thursday off). Is it going to be impossible to get from Columbia heights to National Airport Inauguration morning?

    • FridayGirl

Not speaking from experience, but as a proud risk-averse person, I wouldn’t chance it. The metro may be fine but I’m going to assume traffic will be wonky the entire week like it was with the Pope. So give yourself extra time either way.

  • anon

Rant: I’m not at all surprised, but today I found out that my thyroid is shot and I need to take meds. I also found out that I have diabetes. This is not a good combo. UGH. It’ll all be fine, I do know that.

    • I’m so sorry to hear that. Wishing you well and good spirits.

      • anon

Thanks, Pop. It’ll all be fine, I’m just disappointed. And I’ll need to learn new habits right as the holidays are approaching. :/

    • FridayGirl

I’m sorry about this! One of my best friends found out she had major thyroid problems in her early 20s. She takes meds now and while it was an adjustment for her she said it really wasn’t that bad and she’s grateful they caught it. I hope you’re feeling better soon.
