“at the very least to treat women and dogs equally (yikes) and post about both, but guess not.”

“I noticed on social media that the National Gallery of Art AND the Hirshhorn (among other places) have chosen to post about National Dog Day instead of the fact that it is Women’s Equality Day. I would think that a gallery for our nation would be politically correct enough to make sure at the very least to treat women and dogs equally (yikes) and post about both, but guess not.”

Eh, I’d guess it was the result of a young social media manager seeing all the posts people made about their dogs and wanted to capitalize on that. I didn’t see one Women’s Equality Day post across all my feeds (which is sad; I wasn’t even aware it was WED!) and I’m guessing this person just didn’t do their due diligence before posting. I wouldn’t take it to mean they, the Hirshhorn, and the U.S. Government don’t care about women’s equality, especially more than they care about dogs. Probably just an understandable oversight.

I believe NGA celebrates Nat’l Women’s History Month in March.

Side note: How sick am I of the National Days of Blah phenomenon. Omg it’s Nat’l Blueberry Pancake Day! Now it’s Nat’l Pooped My Pants Day! And tomorrow, Nat’l Bracelets Day! *Serenity now*

    • DC_Chica

Totally agree! hahaha – I just looked up NGA on Twitter and they “celebrated” National Waffle Day on the 24th. (with a picture of an antique waffle iron, I am not kidding!)

      • houseintherear

        MAKE IT STOP

      • dcd

With a nod to the departed (and sorely missed) George Carlin, “This just in from the National Institute of Pancakes: Fuck Waffles.”

    • INWDC

Agreed. Retire this plus the annoying listcles trend and the world will be an ever so slightly better place.

    • Becca

+1 It’s impossible to keep track of it all! Almost like we’re setting people up to fail. “I can’t believe you didn’t wish me a happy left-handers who are from Michigan Day!!!”

  • Ward One Resident

    Oh for pete’s sake!

  • Anonymous

Yeah – this is what’s wrong with the world.
Hey, has anyone else found something that we can be offended by? It’s a lot easier than working on real problems.

  • Truxton Thomas

Been so swamped I barely got my Women’s Equality Day tree up last night.

    • ANC

It’s 77% the size of a normal tree!

      • Lewis

        nailed it

  • Josh

Thank the stars that the politically correct police are on the job looking for things to be offended by. Lights and sirens folks… the NGA and Hirshhorn posted a picture of a dog. Whoo Whoo Whoo….

  • Cam

Actually, whether it’s a special day or not, I’d like to see this country pay much more attention to women’s equality issues! Paid maternity leave, equal pay for equal work, sexual harassment…

    • Anonymous

Absolutely right. Worrying about whether we’re sufficiently recognizing “Women’s Equality Day” is an irrelevant distraction from the actual work at hand though. (Unless you’re only trying to get equality for one day a year.)

    • henry

…and who better to spearhead this issue on social media than an art gallery.

      • ANC

      • Anonymous

um, not if you actually want to reach a large audience.

        • henry

          Sorry, I was being sarcastic.

          • Anonymous

oops, nice one. I missed it. My bad, I’m usually pretty good at that.

    • timmyp2353

I just wish that it would be a major issue in the presidential race. Oh wait, it is.

  • samanda_bynes

yeah, i mean, it is kinda sh!tty BUT, to be fair, there’s WAY more paintings bout women than dogs. dogs are cool too.

    • KenyonDweller

and more often than not, they both lack clothing in those paintings.

  • ParkViewneighbor

OP, aren’t you pushing the being offended game a little too far here ?
Who cares about the xyz day ? there are so many of them nobody bothers anyway. If women’s equality actually relies on the women’s equality day, I pity this country

  • Dognonymous

    We have reached peak PoPville.

    • Shaw

This is seriously why people vote for Trump. Every time you act slighted because of something so PC and stupid, a Trump voter gets their wings… errrr… ballot. Nobody even knew it was national lady day, and nobody should, because such a thing is stupid.

      • Anon

This is stupid, but pretending faux outrage is the reason people vote for Trump and not, I dunno, racism and xenophobia, is not just stupid, it’s dangerous.

        • anon

so, every single trump voter is a racist xenophobe?

          • Anon

However they may justify their choices and compartmentalize their lives in an effort to sleep at night doesn’t take away the fact that supporting institutional racism is inherently racist

  • Anon

I’m sure Louise Bourgeois is just reeling in her grave.

  • Elvis’s Mom

Isn’t the sadder thing that women’s equality gets exactly one day when we’re the majority? Just sayin’

    • Q

Women’s Equality Day marks the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote. I’m pretty sure that didn’t last longer than a day.

    • Hill Denizen

There’s also Women’s History Month, World Women’s Day, Equal Pay Day….

    • Elvis’s Mom

I was mostly being sarcastic, but yes – the day should be celebrated, but I am less worried about the optics than actually, you know, getting equality.

    Doooooooon’t carrrrrrrrrrrreeeee

  • Kingman Park

If this is what you have to complain about, your life isn’t that bad.

  • Kevin

    LOL @ manufactured outrage.

  • a feminist

Popville, you got trolled by a Poe.

Women’s Equality Day was last Friday.

    • What the hell is a Poe? This is from the forum section posted on Friday.

      • a feminist

A “poe” is a person who trolls by being an exaggerated version of a stereotype. It used to be used to describe fundamentalists, but pretty much is anything online.

        From the UrbanDictionary.com:

Similar to Murphy’s Law, Poe’s Law concerns internet debates, particularly regarding religion or politics.

“Without a winking smiley or other blatant display of humor, it is impossible to create a parody of ______ that SOMEONE won’t mistake for the real thing.”

Didn’t mean to offend. I tend to be very skeptical of things like comments from people I don’t know on the internet. Lots of people can pretend they’re an offended woman. On the internet, no one knows you’re a dog.

  • Yeah, there definitely aren’t enough photos of women on Instagram.
