“The first is a picture took after I went dogsledding in Tromsø, Norway. The dog was trying to untie my laces.

The second is a bit blurry, as I did not have my tripod when we saw the Northern Lights. This picture was taken onboard a Hurtigruten Ferry called Vesterålen, just north of Tromsø in the Norwegian Sea.”

Probably my fave T-shirt travel photo evah! The dog one is funny but the Northern Lights – very cool – wow

Can anyone offer valid first hand advice for getting to see the Northern lights (no Googled or smart assed answers please)? I know they are a natural deal so there are no guarantees but what is the best chance of getting to see them? Is there a certain season or months of the year where they are more popular? Is there a certain part of the earth where they show up more frequently, etc? I would be bummed to plan a trip somewhere and find out they only show up in the winter or something lol.

I have thought about a trip to Alaska to try to see them, and a trip to Iceland to see them, had not considered the Scandinavian countries until now.

Iceland is your best bet, if you want to do it quickly and affordably. Iceland Air flies direct from BWI and it’s much cheaper than going to Scandinavia. Otherwise, drive up to Canada.

Respect for the exposed hands in the top photo.
