You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in DC.

Rant: Back at work after being out of town last week. Didn’t have a chance to go grocery shopping, so all I have for lunch is almonds and gingerbread cookies.

    • Anonymous

I’m in the same boat as you! Had an enjoyable ski trip and then a long visit with the family, but back to the grind today. All I have for lunch is almonds and yogurt.

      • Anonymous

Yours is a little more balanced at least. :)

Rant: Flight home today has been delayed two hours.
Rave: I will be home back in DC sometime today.

Rant: back at my pointless job. One week off – yep, still pointless.

Rave: looking forward to great news about my child’s school.

  • Over-the-shoulder peek at the guy sitting in front of me on the bus who was checking his mobile banking app showed that he had $207,000 in CHECKING!! Is that normal? He seemed to be late twenties.

Next I checked to see if he was wearing a wedding band. He was. :(

    • Anonymous

Probably liquidated his assets + some mortgage downpayment assistance from his family in preparation of buying a house. He probably checks it every other minute to feel baller, till closing…

      • Anonymous

Or he’s on a joint account with parents. My girlfriend has some high-figure accounts with her mom but it’s not really her money to spend.

    • ha!

Ha! I would totally react the same way – gobsmacked. (don’t think i’d check for the wedding ring since i’m hitched, but still.) isn’t money funny? we keep it all so secretive, we dont know what other people have, so we have no idea what is “normal” in each other’s bank accounts or savings or whatever. but i have to think $207k is bananas. my husb likes to keep an extra $6-8k just sloshing around the bottom of our checking account just in case, which I find funny and never did before I was married. we have friends who told us once they keep $100k in cash at all times. ??!!
In general, i just totally share your reaction and voyeurism at the peek in to someone else’s bank account. would we all be better off if we were more transparent about these things? i don’t know.

Next Big App Idea for Urban Single Guys and Girls: a fake mobile banking app to show *very* large balances in *very* large text. Ha!

    • Kam

Not cool. What causes people to do such things? That goes for you and him.

Him – That is how you get followed, set up and robbed.

You – That is how you can quickly encounter a problem you don’t want or didn’t think would occur.

      • Anonymous

Gee, welcome back, Kam. We really missed you scolding us and telling people how to conduct their business. What causes you to do such things?

        • Kam

Thanks for the warm reception ; ) Just trying to apply some common sense to real life situations. What causes me to do it because I don’t want to see a post like below:

          Dear PoP,

I was on the X2/70 bus and I was checking my bank account/counting my cash. I was so proud of having over $200K in my account and I thought I was such a baller. I didn’t think the whole bus could see how much I was banking. But you know, the weirdest thing happened, someone who normally doesn’t get off at my stop followed me and robbed me at gunpoint as I got to my house/ATM and forced me to give him money. I tried to tell him that it really wasn’t my money and that I had no access to it so he began to pistol whip me. It was a scene straight out of a movie, PoP. What would him do do that? I don’t get it.

PoP, I was all in someone’s phone and they caught me looking and they cussed me out and called me all kinds of names. No I didn’t know them but they have no right to speak to me like that. I was just looking at their phone.

    • Capital One has a decent interest rate for its checking account, better rate than savings acct which is why I have $0 in savings account and a lot more in checking, though not $200k

Totally agree. I’m not even sure I can say “maybe next year” this time around. Found myself sorta rooting for Dallas last night, that’s how bad it’s gotten. I’ve been trying to be a Raven, but I just can’t for some reason. Oh well, Go Seminoles!

    • West Coast-to-DC Carpetbagger

Ravens fans and players are obnoxious. Can’t stand ’em and I enjoy watching them lose.
I root for the ‘Skins because they are a perennial underdog. Sort of like how I feel about the Buffalo Bills. That said, Snyder makes is very tough to be cheering for the ‘Skins. I wish he would sell, but it’s never going to happen.

Rant: My shingles has moved into the scratchy phase.

rant: back at work today after a wonderful holiday with family and friends
rave: off the next two days
rave: 10 days until a nice two week vacation that starts/ends in Germany with a week of skiing in Austria in between. I’ve never been on a trip this long and am really looking forward to relaxing and being disconnected from every day life/work.
tiny rant: I will miss our puppy, but know she will have a blast hanging out with my sister and her three dogs while we are gone.

    • L

So jealous of your trip! I’ve been wanting to check out skiing in Austria. I loved Vienna when I visited a few years ago. And I read some WaPo article awhile back that talked about how a lot of the Austrian ski towns are so close to each other and locals go skiing on their lunch breaks. Have a great trip, and be sure to update us when you get back!

Rant – caribou closing. Baby and I spent a lot of time there and my folks too whenever they stayed at the helix.

Rant – sleep deprived to an extent I feel like a prisoner of war. I have no idea how I’ll be able to go back to work.

Rave – going home this weekend with baby for the first time. Nervous to travel. But excited to be home for the first time in too long.

Rant: So my sister in law goes outside to move her car last night and before she can close the door behind her she darts back in and slams the door, frantically trying to lock the locks. I am sitting there like WTF is going on? All I could think (and I am dead serious) was that someone was trying to get in and I might actually have to kill someone (wife is next me on the couch and 7 month old baby girl is upstairs). So I ask her, what’s wrong and she says there are a bunch of people outside and they just kept pointing (presumably in the direction of the house/door). So I check it out by looking out of the transom window and I indeed see a crowd of people in front of my house. Then a split second later, I notice what all the hubbub is about, there is a big ole opossum on the front of our gate (how or why he climbed up there I don’t know) but he was not moving (playing dead I suppose). Then I see people start to try to get it to move by kicking my fence and throwing object at it and at that point I told them to stop and to leave him alone, he will be fine. They all say OK (grown adults by the way) so I go back to watching the late game while my wife calls 311 who basically said there is nothing that they can do…But then I tell her (thinking back to a previous Popville post which was at the opposite end of my block) to tell them they are throwing stuff and it is becoming a scene and at that point they say they will send and officer out. Something tells me to go back and one of the guys (who I think may be been drunk or high or whatever) is still there messing with it. I watch the guy for a bit and he really is going out of his way to mess with the animal. I again go back out and tell him to stop and that the boys are on the way so he might want to leave as to not be seen throwing stuff at the opossum and this guy tells me he just trying to take a pic and whips out his phone and starts taking pics inches away from the opossum. At this point, I was wishing I had my phone because something hilarious (sorry, I know but I’m saying, he was starting to deserve whatever came his way) is about to happen this this opossum gets pissed). Long story short, everyone left and the opossum chilled there and seemed to go to sleep on a metal chain fence. I went to move the car and he was still there 15 minutes later.

Rave: I checked on him 20 minutes after I moved the car and was delighted to see that animal control had finally arrived. As the officer put on her gloves, I warned her that I had seen him recently during the day and she told me that it is normal. I asked her “aren’t they nocturnal” and she said yes but it is different with urban/city dwelling animals because of all of the lights their clocks are all screwed up so just because you see them or other nocturnal animals in the daytime does not mean they have rabies. She also mentioned, that they are a really high immune system and are far less likely to get rabies as compared to a dog. She was very glad and thankful that we called and I too was happy that he was safe. I asked what would happen to him and she said that he would go to a rehaber (her words not mine) and then be released into the wild which I could only assume that she meant Rock Creek Park. LOL!

Rant: Assistant dousing herself in body spray/perfume at 8:30 this morning. So strong, I had to close my door. Seriously people, leave the perfumes at home if you don’t know how to wear it discretely. Any BY NO MEANS should you be applying it at work, especially if YOU don’t have a door you can shut. NOBODY wants to smell any of that. My nostrils are now stuck with the smell likely for the rest of the day.

Rant: I just realized that when I was scraping ice off of my car a few weeks ago that I smudged/marked up the damn car, I wonder how much it will cost to buff it out? So annoyed.

Anyway, been awhile for me on here – HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!

Oh. My. Lord. Did you just save this all up or have you been commenting elsewhere?

      • Kam

I just typed it. It only took a couple of minutes. And yes, I have commented elsewhere. Not sure what that solves but there ya go.

Rave: Rainy Sunday = perfect day for making soup. White bean and kale soup to be specific.
Rave: Late breakfast of white bean and kale soup

    • Mmm…sounds good! Do you puree the white beans to make it thicker or keep the broth as just a simple stock?

      • MPinDC

I’ve done both & prefer the simple stock. Depending on what I have at hand, I’ll saute onion, garlic, celery, carrots, peppers (both sweet and jalapeno) & add pureed tomatoes. And at the end, some angel hair pasta, cilantro and lime juice. I should call it “mostly white beans and kale” soup.

        • Anonymous

That sounds kinda crazy. Do you break up the pasta at least?

          • MPinDC

I’ll break the angel hair pasta in half – it only take a few minutes to cook. Any other small pasta would work – you can also cook the pasta separately. Or use rice noodles, or go the “no pasta” route – that’s also very good :)

        • That sounds great! I was thinking of making a soup with greens this week, and I have those ingredients, plus leftover dry macaroni to throw in. Thanks!

  • Tall E

Rave: Saw Bao Bao today! Thanks to a connected friend. Just adorable. Apologies but can’t send in pix until the zoo puts her on public display.
    Rant: The ex.
    Rave: Glad it’s over.

hahah 2014, good luck with new partners!

Aaahhh, SO jealous! I wanted to get a zoo membership since members are getting an early preview (I’ve been planning to join anyway, but this would have given me the kick in the pants to do so)…but of COURSE the preview coincides exactly with the week I’ll be on vacation in Florida. And I love Bao Bao, but not enough to give up the beach! ;) At least it’ll give me something to look forward to when I get back to DC!

      • Anon 1:44

PS, sounds like you were extra-lucky! Last time I was at the zoo, I heard one of the volunteers telling another visitor (who’d asked if she’d seen the baby panda yet) that not even the regular volunteers were getting a peek at Bao Bao. Congrats!

    RANT: people who don’t RSVP.
RANT: All of my awesome single friends (both male and female) and I can’t find anyone with whom I can hook them up. I’d love it if my NYE gathering turned into a massive snog fest.

“I’d love it if my NYE gathering turned into a massive snog fest.”
This is how sex parties/pornos get started. If anyone is dressed up like a cable guy or a pizza delivery boy, beware.

  • Rant: Made a rare trip to Columbia Heights Giant today (usually go to Harris Teeter) and it was HORRIBLE. 2:30 in the afternoon so not a rush hour time. I got caught behind a crazy lady (Who I actually let go before me when a new line opened up – because she had so little) counting pennies who’s card didn’t work and had to go outside and walk around to find a different ATM = 20 + minute nightmare (???) Cashier sullen and unresponsive, no manager ever intervened or offered to help.

NEVER NEVER will I shop at Giant ever!
