You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in DC.

  • Rave: Friday finally.

Rave: Swift justice based on clear evidence. I hope we get to hear what the motive was to truly painting a picture of how mentally remedial the perps of the Boston Bombing were.

Rave: Big potential for a downtown construction project, fingers crossed.

Rave: Finally picking up a guitar for a jam session Saturday, it’s been 2 months.

    (All Raves Today!)

I hope they catch the second bomber and rendition him to Russia for “questioning.”

      • Anonymous

why did u support torture u sicko

        • Anonymous

They murdered an eight year old. I have no sympathy for them.

          • Anonymous

you don’t need sympathy to not be pro-torture.
no decent person has sympathy for these bombers.

          • KenyonDweller

I’m old fashioned, but I believe that society has a responsibility to be better than its criminals or terrorists.

          • We’ll be better (as a society) if they don’t have the ability to ever do something this callous ever again. It’s unfortunate, but it’s also reality, but also by seeing how this ended out, it will discourage other would-be cowards from ever committing crimes like this again.

Rant: The whacko bomber in Boston went to the same high school as my brother and sister. Glad he is down for the count.

  • Rave: Sour cream pancakes. Just tried a new recipe from the Pioneer Woman cookbook–soo good!

Rant: Silverfish. They seem to crop up in my kitchen & bathroom every time the weather warms up. Anyone know of good remedies to get rid of them without harming household pets?

    • Silverfish hate the smell of dryer sheets. You can put them in areas where you think they’re coming from and they will stay away; I used to put them in the back of my bookshelf behind my books to keep them from eating the pages.

  • Rave: Friday. Enough said.

  • KenyonDweller

To the guy who raced in front of me to grab the last CaBi dock, that was a dick move. Really classy. Hope you feel good about yourself.

    • em

You should have run him over with your bike! (jk – I wouldn’t advocate violence. However, I know how you feel, because it has happened to me, too. And to those who say “what is the matter with being quick and crafty?” – this is supposed to be a place to rant, so let KenyonDweller have their rant.)

      • KenyonDweller

May he awake with a sqrat in his bed.

        • This made me chuckle out loud. :)

Rave: Staying up too late telling my son semi-sordid tales of his mom and my first months together — how she left the guy she was living with standing bewildered in a bar (the guy I stole her from in the first place) and made her way to my Swann Street group house literally a half-hour after I’d pulled the plug on a date with a girl I’d been failing to console myself with (housemate: “Is that other girl still here? Because S. is up in your room.”) and a half hour before I moved to Boston with no forwarding address. Got all sniffly together about that one.

Rant: Son worried about his place in the cosmos even though he has a good job and he’s not a failure in the basement, he’s keeping his old dad company. Tried to explain that I was a near complete fuck-up until far older than he is and it worked out OK, but not sure he was consoled.

    Rant: Back from Europe.

Rave: Back on the water (rowing). Even my blisters make me smile.

    • Your story reminds me of what my dad told me when I turned 28. I had moved back in with my parents a few months earlier, had a semi-lame job, and wasn’t feeling exactly like hot shit.

My dad: Well you’re doing better than I was when I was 28. By that point, I had been married, had 3 kids, got divorced, went bankrupt and was sleeping on my best friend’s couch. I’d say you’re doing pretty well for yourself!

Considering my dad turned out to have a pretty successful life (both professisonally and personally), that was one of the best things he could have said to me that day…

    • I want to hear more semi sordid tales!

  • I didn’t even like Boston very much when I lived there, but I’ve been close to tears all morning. I hope this ends soon, with no further loss of life.

  • PG

Rant: Second day in a row I didn’t bike to Metro because of rain. By the time I got off Metro the rain had stopped!

Rave: Band gig tomorrow. First one in about a month, and this means I’m getting out of my regular acoustic gig (which I’m really don’t enjoy playing.)

    • You’ll be better off not having biked on your way home though; supposed to be severe thunderstorms this afternoon.

      • PG

Yeah, it’s probably a good thing. I hope it clears up tomorrow and I can get a decent ride in.

  • Rant: Still can’t get over the craziness of the events this week, starting, of course, with the Boston bomings. The news from the small town in Texas is pretty devastating as well. So sad for people.

Rave: Oh my goodness, I’m 32 weeks along. So crazy! The end of April is jam-packed with prep stuff that’s supposed to be done 6-8 weeks before the expected due date, so I feel a bit like a chicken with my head cut off, especially since I’m trying (so hard!) to finish something for work before I go on leave. But I’m started to get excited for mid-June and our little peanut that we look forward to meeting then :)

Another Rave: met another expecting mom at a new parent group session at a pediatrician’s office–she’s due a week before me & lives just one street up! Yay for having a nearby new mom!

    • yay!
which pediatrician did you go with?

      • We’ve only visited one (out of three planned) so far–we were at Washington Pediatrics yesterday, and really liked Dr. Lang. We are also meeting with Capitol Medical Group in Chevy Chase and Dr McKnight over by Washington Hospital Center/Children’s Hospital next week.

Can someone please explain what the winning photo contest caption means? I googled it and all I get are links to popville.

    • It’s a joke from the old Fanta soda commercials where women used to be wearing three different really bright monochromatic outfits and singing “don’t you want a Fanta? Don’t you want a Fanta?” except they made it all victorian-y sounding because the dresses are so poofy.

      • I loved those fanta commercials! I actually tried my first fanta because of those commercials.

      • Anonymous

        I don’t remember those commercials, and I’m old! (I’ll be 43 in a month.)

      • Thanks for the explanation — I don’t remember those Fanta commercials either!

  • AnononFriday

Google ‘Fanta commercial’ and you’ll get the reference. I actually thought that was a pretty clever caption.

  • Rave: Have an appointment with a specialist on hill billy teeth so maybe busted tooth will get fixed for good and the pain will stop soon.

Rave: I love seeing a dentist for the first time. They always spend about 5 mins marveling over my teeth :) I like to predict which they will like more, the baby tooth or the falsies.

Rant: I really can’t think of anything but teeth right now b/c tooth #3 hurts!

  • Anonymous

Rant: I am sad and emotionally exhausted about everything that’s happened this week. I just want to stay in bed until everything is over.

Rave: The forecast is calling for thunderstorms tonight, which makes for a perfect evening of staying in on my couch and catching up on Mad Men episodes.

Additional rave: this Onion article: http://www.theonion.com/articles/jesus-this-week,32105/

  • Rant: Getting pretty much nothing done at work today since I can’t seem to keep myself from looking for Boston updates. Please let this end quickly and with no more loss of life or people hurt. So messed up.

  • Caroline

Rant: Haven’t been sleeping well this week.
Rave: My cousin’s first book came out this week, and I’m really enjoying it so far.

  • Anonymous

Rave: The fact that TVs are standard issues in the offices at my organization. I am so memorized by the Boston coverage. This is almost like a movie.

    • Anon

      The Boston coverage remembers you?

  • Anonymous

Rave: The fact my organization issues TVs in each office – this Boston coverage is mesmerizing. It’s like a movie, seems unreal.

  • Britt

Rant: My goodness – seriously hoping all (well… maybe except one) stay safe in the Boston area. Sending love and positive thoughts.

Rave: As much as I sometimes hate facebook, I love being able to confirm my good friends and family in Boston area are safe, sound, and heeding the police’s orders.

  • BeverlyS

    Rave: Cute cat videos. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Im4TO03CuF8)
Rave: This picture of the sun/deck is calming. Good choice, PoP
Rant: Insomnia. Related – Jesus, this week.

    • Thank you! I think I’m going to watch the Dansons la capucine cat video on repeat. *poom*

      • BeverlyS

YW. I harbor troves of cat videos and I’m not sorry.

  • MP

Rant: There’s a disadvantage to not driving very often (& car sitting in the driveway) – the tires had dry rot.

Rave: New tires, not as expensive as I feared.

    • Yeah, when I moved here from Texas and discovered the joys of public transportation, husband and I did not realize that if you don’t start the car for a while the battery dies. We just… had no idea…

  • Rant: Boss got promoted
Rant: I took job because I wanted to work directly for him
Rave: He is going to fix this organization from the top!
Rave: Could be a promotion in the wings for me too!
