You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in DC.

Rant: Cop car blocked the bus on Connecticut Ave. on my way to work causing a backup.

Rave: Cops were arresting this guy: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/crime-scene/post/dc-police-seek-gray-haired-bank-robber-with-cane/2012/12/27/9c3cc0a4-5024-11e2-839d-d54cc6e49b63_blog.html

Rave: Excuse for being late to work.

Rant: Late last night I learned an old high school buddy passed away suddenly. Wondering if it was from shoveling snow up in Mass from the recent storm? He was 45. He left behind a bunch of cute kids and a lovely wife. Life goes by so fast, cherish every moment.

    Rant: At work.
Rave: So looking forward to the weekend. Picking up my guy and feel like I wil have to restrain myself from jumping into his arms, ala Love Actually…

  • Little things that make me happy:
    rave: found my favorite sweater
    rave: earmuffs
rave: woke up to a scream in my dreams, the scream was a business idea!
rave: looking forward to a quiet end/beginning of the year.

    • 17th Street

I am 99.9% certain I have never heard anyone rave over dream screams, but good for you that it was a positive thing!

  • Rave: 16-week checkup yesterday, and relatively smooth sailing continues. gotta love hearing the heart beating on the doppler – can’t wait to feel movement soon!

    • I recommend recording it, I did a recording of my daughter’s heartbeat and I look forward to show it to her someday.

      • That’s an interesting idea – what did you use to record it?

        • anon

Some modern sonogram machines allow for video capture, ask your OB if it’s possible. In some cases you can bring them a thumbdrive and they can copy it right off of the device

        • I used an iPod touch, is not the best recording ever but I have it!

Rave: Not working today, which makes this a two day work week.

Rant: my cell phone is dying. I just want a basic cell phone that has good call quality, but they seem to be going the way of the dinosaur. I looked into how much more per month it would be for a phone with data (on Verizon) and it looks like it would be over $50 more – seriously? Twice as much? I am going to Verizon today to verify that this is correct. So – anyone have a basic cell phone that has great call quality? I am seriously contemplating getting rid of my cell phone entirely if I can’t replace it with something that works well.

    • user of a dumbphone

Have you tried replacing your cell phone’s battery?

I’m still using my Nokia 3220, now more than 7 years old. A year or so I thought I was going to have to get rid of it, as it wasn’t holding the battery charge… but a relative suggested getting a new battery. A mere $10 on Amazon.com, and the phone was as good as new!

      • anon

I’ll try that, thanks. The battery life seems fine, it is just that the sound quality seems to be deteriorating. I get a lot of calls that sound like Charlie Brown’s mother. So, I think it may be the speaker. But for $10, it is worth a try. I bought the phone second hand about a year and a half ago, so it has had a good, long life. I just keep finding reviews for the 3 or 4 dumb phones available and they all just have OK call quality, which is frustrating.

    • Britt

Not sure if you want to get into a cell phone contract but I have a “dumb” phone that I got for free from AT&T when we signed up for a contract and it works perfectly. Goes days without being charged (5 days most of the time) and I’ve never had a problem with call quality. It’s a “ZTE” Model “F160″…

I was a flip phoner until last Christmas. I looked like that guy who doesn’t get the girl (on the train in the commercial), pulling out my ancient phone. Boost Mobile has a great monthly deal on Android smartphone plans that gets cheaper over time as long as you pay on time each month. It is a Sprint 3G network. No contract, unlimited data, talk and internet for $55 a month. I call it my ghetto phone but seriously it was way cheaper than upgrading our Verizon plan just to be allowed to pay them even more for a smartphone plan and data. Once you get a smartphone you’ll never go back.

      • anon (the original one)

Ha! Actually, I had a blackberry for a few years and I went back to a flip. I just don’t need all that stuff on my phone. I also have an iPad (got it as a gift) and don’t get it at all. I don’t really want to spend extra money for something I don’t think I’ll use. I’m a luddite like that. :)

Rant: (Actually, more of a pet peeve): People who say that something they don’t like is “like kyrptonite” to them. Kryptonite doesn’t affect earthlings, it only hurts Superman and others from Krypton!

    Yeah, I’m pretty bored today.

  • Rant: US Airways. Got home a day late–an improvement! Last time it was two+ days and to a different airport. Also, the power went off completely while we were still on the tarmac this morning and the US Airways ground power supply didn’t work. Good thing Southwest Airlines was there to lend their equipment to get it restarted! Hearing your pilots say “F*ck!” and try to get your plane’s engine to turn over is pretty unnerving.

Super rant: 91 year old great aunt had a stroke Christmas day. Just so sad and so worried for her. For a lot of reasons, this was a pretty horrible Christmas.

I keep picturing two planes nose-to-nose on the runway with jumper cables running from one to another. :)

rant – baby pandy. i still miss her so much especially now around the holidays. and i am bothered that all you people are not commemorating her in your end of the year tributes. she was so precious, so small.

  • rant: United delayed our Wednesday flight from mbs to ord by two hours which entailed missing the ord to dca connection (only flight not delayed). next available was this afternoon.

rant 2: master closet installation was yesterday at 9 am so we drove 12 hours thru the night (and horrible Ohio turnpike conditions!) to be here by then only to find out mold underneath the baseboards.

rave: our awesome contractor is coming out tomorrow to fix this so we can squeeze into the only available two day closet installation in the next 3 months!

Rave: just locked in to refi 3% for 15 yrs…morgage is now a mere $1000 — $500 savings; paid off car early — $325 savings =$825 savings per month!!! 2013 maybe the year I finally pay off the student loan.

Rant: neighbor’s dog is driving me crazy…bark bark bark. At lease once each week I go complain, she rolls her eyes at me. Overheard her through the door, “that lady is such a pain.” Really?!

    • Anonymous

Congratulations! We’re getting close to closing on our refinance, which is exciting considering we started the process half a year ago. Our terms aren’t as good as yours but we’ll be saving around $500 a month as well. :)

      • rayul

Oh gosh that is terrible. they are promising me 60 days. I’m going w/ my current lender. Hopefully everything will go as planned.

        Good luck to you.

There was a big queue in the summer/fall. Things might be better now.

  • So sad

    Broke up. Really sad.

Going through this now and some days are better than others. Hang in there. I hope you feel better soon.

Rant/question: Can anyone explain why supplemental retirement contributions are limited to $17,000 per year? I understand we shouldn’t be able to sequester a massive fortune tax-free, but $17k seems so so low. Especially for those of us with low salaries/poor matching options thorough our employers or who got a late start on retirement savings from being in school, it makes it really hard to accumulate a retirement fund we might actually be able to retire on.

    • anon

It stinks, but check out the IRS limits – they’ve upped it to 17,500 for 2013. Also, depending on your income, you might also be eligible for a ROTH. again, check the IRS income and contribution limits.

      • Also goes up another few thousand once you hit the big 50

      • Anonymous

OK, so the amount is more like $25k, but that doesn’t change the question about why the limits are so low. Given that there aren’t really many investment possibilities that will yield more than a percent or two, this limit really stands in the way of people who would like to fund their own retirement but who don’t have big employment-based retirement funds.

        • what are your fund choices? 2% seems really low. My ytd return with fideility (I work for state of md) is 11%…

          • Anonymous

I got about the same this year, but over the past 5 years it’s at 0.45% — seems like the better number to use for long-term likely returns. Saving this money tax-free is the only thing that makes a retirement fund better than sticking the money under the mattress.

        • Anonymous

How do you have 25k to put away on a low salary? Impressive.

          • Anonymous

Priorities and watching the loose change. I cut out the easy stuff that doesn’t affect my quality of life (make coffee at work instead of buying at Starbucks, usually bring my own lunch, no cable TV that I never watched, don’t eat much take out because I like to cook, etc.), that stuff can add up. I don’t cheap out on entertainment or travel so it doesn’t feel like I’m sacrificing, really.

  • Rave: NYE off for the first time in 7 years! Going to hang with my bestie.

Rave: Checked out Union Market for the first time and loved it! Had the tuna tartare and punch from Rappahannock Oysters and the punch of the day at Buffalo and Bergen.

Rant: Had promising first date last week and was looking foward to going out with the dude again. Cut to yesterday when texts me for what sounds like a hookup! What the hell? We haven’t even had a 2nd date! I’m not a prude in anyway, but I’m not looking for hook ups right now, I want a relationship. So disappointed, he seemed like a good guy.

Rant: Can’t find a date for the company party. I really don’t want to go alone, but everyone i’ve asked is not available.
